Therefore, in order to refute the many views of others who have such inverted perceptions of the manifest, this has been done in accordance with the definition of valid cognition (pramāṇa). This is entirely the intention of the Bhagavan, as it is said in the scriptures: “O monks and wise men, Like gold that is burned, cut, and rubbed, After thorough examination, accept my words, Not out of respect for me.” This shows that he only accepts the two types of valid cognition, direct perception (pratyakṣa) and inference (anumāna), because he accepts thorough examination through examples and so on. The example of direct perception is to show that it is in accordance with burning (gold). The example of inference is to show that it is in accordance with rubbing (gold). Not contradicting each other is said to be thoroughly examined in accordance with cutting (gold), and that is also inference. Thus, there are three types of meaning: direct perception, hidden, and very hidden. Among them, for the directly perceived meaning of the Buddha's words, it is examined by direct perception like gold is examined by burning. For the hidden meaning, it is examined by inference like it is examined by rubbing. For the very hidden meaning of that, it is examined by not contradicting each other like gold is examined by cutting. Therefore, for a completely pure body, even if the object is hidden, those who believe that valid cognition with conceptual thought is reliable will accept it. In the Abhidhamma, it is said, "With eye consciousness, one knows blue, but does not think 'it is blue,'" and "One knows the object as an object, but does not perceive the object as a dharma." These two statements show the non-inverted nature of the object, thus explaining the nature of non-mistakenness. The statements "does not think 'it is blue'" and "does not perceive the object as a dharma" show that the grasping of meaning associated with names is abandoned, thus explaining the nature of being free from conceptual thought. Similarly, it is also said in that very text that eye consciousness and so on are definitely conceptual thought, and that conceptual thought of recollection is also called non-conceptual thought, and the collection of eye consciousness and so on gives rise to form and so on.
