I, the opponent who speaks with refutations, does your reasoning establish by coinciding with what is to be proven, or by not coinciding? If it establishes by coinciding, then at that time it becomes no different from what is to be proven, just as river water coincides with the ocean. Furthermore, does this what is to be proven coincide together with what has already been proven, or with what has not been proven? For the time being, it is not with what has not been proven, because it does not exist like a rabbit's horn. If what is to be proven has already been proven, then whose reasoning does this become? Therefore, the side of coinciding is not reasonable. Moreover, the side of not coinciding is also not valid, because there is no difference from reasonings that do not coincide. It is like saying, "Because the reasoning does not coincide." This is a refutation that equates coinciding and not coinciding, because it is unreasonable, so it refutes the reasoning. Whatever has coinciding and not coinciding, merely by having similar qualities, even if it possesses the characteristics of reasoning, it also becomes non-reasoning. What reason is there in this? Because water and earth, etc., have similar qualities, fire cannot burn, that is not the case. What is to be proven is also not completely unestablished like a rabbit's horn. What is it then? It is because certainty has not arisen. Your refutation to the refutation is also the same as all these faults, therefore it is not a refutation. Therefore, there is no end to such inverted questions. One should not individually explain their characteristics, but rather think that merely by grasping the characteristics of valid cognition as explained, one can eliminate them. The concise summary of the first part of the Drop of Reasoning is complete. Composed by the greatly learned teacher Kamalaśīla. Translated and finalized by the Indian abbot Śuddha Siṃha and the revising translator, the monk Pal brtsegs Rakṣita. Concise summary of the first part of the Drop of Reasoning.
