A Brief Explanation of the First Chapter of the Nyāyabindu A Brief Explanation of the First Chapter of the Nyāyabindu In Sanskrit: Nayabindu Pūrvapakṣe Saṃkṣipta. In Tibetan: A Brief Explanation of the First Chapter of the Nyāyabindu. Homage to the lords of the Blessed Ones. There are four types of misperception: misperception of number, misperception of self-nature, misperception of object, and misperception of result. Among these, misperception of number is as follows: The Cārvākas say that only direct perception is the sole means of valid cognition, and nothing else. The Sāṃkhyas say that direct perception, inference, and scripture are the only three means of valid cognition. The Naiyāyikas say that direct perception, inference, analogy, and scripture are the only four means of valid cognition. The Vaiśeṣikas say that direct perception, inference, analogy, scripture, implication (arthāpatti, Devanagari: अर्थापत्ति, Romanization: arthāpatti, meaning: presumption), and non-existence (abhāva, Devanagari: अभाव, Romanization: abhāva, meaning: absence) are the only six means of valid cognition. The Carakas and others say that there are other means of valid cognition such as reason, non-perception, popular tradition, and conjecture. Among these, misperception of self-nature is as follows: The Naiyāyikas say that all direct perception is of the nature of certainty, and therefore is always accompanied by conceptualization. The Vaiśeṣikas say that only the first moment of cognition that arises is non-conceptual, and all subsequent direct perceptions are conceptual. Similarly, other schools believe that illusions such as perceiving a conch shell as yellow are also valid cognitions. Similarly, the Vaiśeṣikas and others say that it is not the nature of consciousness, but rather the connection between the sense faculty and the object. Some say that it is the nature of the connection between the self and the mind. Others say that direct perception is the nature of the functioning of the sense faculties such as the ear. Similarly, the gandharvas and others believe that the so-called mental direct perception is not a valid means of cognition, because if it is not a different object from what was previously apprehended by direct perception, then it is a re-apprehension of what has already been apprehended.

Therefore, it is not a valid means of knowledge at all. If the object is a different meaning, then, because this would lead to autonomy, and because all meanings are objects, nothing would become something like a blind person, they say. The Vaibhashikas and others think that self-cognizance is also unreasonable, because this would lead to oneself acting on oneself, they say. The Vaisheshikas say that all individuals are deluded by desire and ignorance, and there is no being that is not like this. Because there is no way to see the meaning that all senses cannot perceive, there are also no yogis established by valid means of knowledge such as direct perception, therefore, because it is impossible to see the meaning that the senses cannot perceive, there is no knowledge of yogis at all, they say. Among them, the inverted understanding of the object is like this: the Naiyayikas and others say that because there is also a general entity, and that should also be completely determined by direct perception, therefore, direct perception is also an object of the characteristic of generality. Similarly, because the nature of the self and others should also be completely determined by inference, therefore, inference should also reasonably be a valid means of knowledge with that as its object, they say. Among them, the inverted understanding of the result is like this: the Vaisheshikas and others say that because what is to be established and the establisher self are considered to be mutually different natures in the world, therefore, the result should reasonably be something other than the valid means of knowledge, just as the ax itself is not the cutting. Therefore, this reality is complete in four aspects, namely: the measurer and the measured, the valid means of knowledge, and realization. Among them, the measurer is the individual. The measured is the object such as form. The valid means of knowledge is the sense faculty and so on. Realization is the complete determination of meaning. When only knowledge is the valid means of knowledge, the later knowledge is the result, and the earlier knowledge is the valid means of knowledge, that is, any knowledge of the difference of generality and so on is the valid means of knowledge. Any knowledge that has the difference of things and so on is the result, they say.
