The three Vedas are three; the one who understands them is a knower of the three Vedas. For those like the Samkhyas who wish to speak, there are words that cannot be grasped by them, which are to be established. Because of having attachment, etc., it is called the reason. This shows, through an example of dissimilar qualities, that wherever there is nothing to be established, there is pervasiveness, which is an example of dissimilar qualities. Those that exist and can be grasped are called words that can be grasped, and by stating the opposite of what is to be established, that they do not possess attachment, etc., it establishes the absence of proof. Those who are Gautamas, etc., say this: that the sages who are trustworthy, etc., remember the scriptures of the Dharma, and they are the authors, called Brahmins of the three Vedas, who can grasp words and are also authors of treatises, and they are also free from attachment. The subjects of Gautama, etc., are the objects of contradiction. From Gautama, etc., there is doubt about the contradiction between the Dharma to be established and the possession of attachment, etc. They are those who grasp words and are knowers of the three Vedas, but are they with desire or without attachment? Thus, there is doubt. Whoever has doubt about the contradiction of both is said to be so. "For example" is an example. "Not without attachment" means that having attachment is what should be established. The Samkhyas, etc., are the subjects. Complete grasping is taking possession of the first thing obtained as one's own. Whatever Samkhya clings to after having taken possession is called complete grasping. Because of those two, complete grasping and complete clinging, and the fifth, the Samkhyas, etc., take possession of what they have obtained, and because they do not give up what they have taken possession of, they appear to possess attachment, etc. This measure, an example that does not conform to the Dharma, should show that where there is nothing to be established, there is no proof. By stating that whatever is free from attachment has nothing to be established, that there is no complete grasping or complete clinging, it is the absence of proof.

It is for the sake of establishing. For example, like a herd of yaks, etc., this is called an example. What is to be established is that it is not separate from desire itself, and the way of establishing it, namely, complete grasping and universal grasping, there is doubt about the contradiction in the examples of herds of yaks, etc. Because there is also doubt whether herds of yaks, etc., do not possess complete grasping and universal grasping, there is also doubt whether they are not separate from desire. Although your treatise says that there is no separation from desire and no complete grasping, it is still just doubt. Furthermore, in order to show the third example, whatever has no contradiction, that is no contradiction. The so-called "not separate from desire" is actually possessing desire, etc., itself, which is what is to be established. The so-called "because it can speak" is the reason. Here, the contradiction shown is that if it is said that whatever is not separate from desire itself cannot be said, then this is cannot be said, that is, it establishes that there is nothing to be established. Therefore, the way of not establishing shows that it pervades what is not to be established. The so-called "like a stone" is an example. How is this without contradiction? Because it is completely opposite in the stone. If it is said that desire and the ability to speak are completely opposite in the stone, but since the contradiction of pervasion is not established, this is without contradiction. What is pervasion? The so-called "all those not separate from desire" speaks of nothing to be established, and then uses "cannot speak" to show that there is no way to establish it. Therefore, what is not to be established is necessarily shown from the way of not establishing, just like pervasion. Therefore, in order to establish this contradiction that has not been established, if this is an example, it is a fault of the example because it does not do its own work. Whatever does not fully show the contradiction is said in that way. The so-called "sound is impermanent," impermanence itself is what is to be established. The so-called "because it is made" is the reason. The so-called "like the sky" is the dharma and
