When it becomes the head, therefore it is called "discipline." The deterioration of discipline leads to death, just like being beheaded. For example, if some monks abandon the precepts, show weakness, and are happy to be in a low state, this is called the death of the Holy Dharma and Vinaya. Or, for the sake of good rebirth, for liberation, and for the benefit of the world, it should be relied upon by the virtuous, therefore it is called "discipline," this is the meaning of the word. Or, virtuous bodily and verbal actions are called discipline, that is, the bodily and verbal actions spoken by the Buddha, what should be done and what should not be done, are practiced accordingly. Or, the naturally good conduct of body and speech that necessarily arises from harmless thoughts, and the characteristic of turning away from the practice of unwholesome actions, is discipline. Or, benefiting others and not harming others with body and speech, and increasing them, is discipline. Or, it is upright body, speech, and livelihood, that is, the characteristic of being liberated from the misconduct of body and speech, completely entering a state of no regret, this is abiding in the place of guarding the senses. Or, that is the characteristic of his body and speech discipline, abiding in a place without discipline, that is abiding in the place of the root of virtue. Or, the nature of purity of body and speech is discipline, abiding in the place of undefiled bliss, that is the place of having faith. There are two types: prescribed discipline and non-prescribed discipline. Prescribed discipline is the virtuous actions of body and speech included by the eyes and ears. Non-prescribed discipline is the protection of body and speech to be understood by consciousness. There are also two types: arising from action and not arising from action. Arising from action refers to what is accumulated by the action of body and speech. Not arising from action refers to even if the mind changes, it is close to the category of being accumulated. There are also two types: preceded by vows and naturally obtained. At the same time as ordination, or when a householder promises to take vows, or when giving away wealth, this is properly taking vows.
