Discarding filth, and likewise eating leftover food, destroying seeds and the basis of training, except for these ten, what is said in the Pratimoksha, should be known to be in accordance with the items that are upheld. Staying together in summer, and the Uposatha, Pravāraṇa, etc., depending on the upheld signs, as well as begging, using, near-using, frolicking, desire and harm and association, disrespect and not learning arise from the root. Thus it is said. The meaning of this is that, holding extra alms bowls and robes, being separated from robes, digging the earth, touching precious jewels, touching fire, eating after giving away, cutting down trees, cutting down wood, etc., eating without being given, discarding impure things in places with green grass, eating leftover food, destroying seeds, these thirteen, and the ten bases of training for a śrāmaṇera, except for these, the other things said in the Pratimoksha Sutra, it should be known that the items that a śrāmaṇera upholds correctly are in accordance with what is appropriate. Those also include promising to stay in summer, the Uposatha and Pravāraṇa, and what is included by the word "etc." is what arises from the root of the sign. The word "root" also becomes ten roots because it corresponds to each one. Among them, what arises from the root of the sign is that from the words of ordination, one should properly uphold the sign of ordination, from which holding the sign of a layman, holding the sign of a householder, likewise making improper things, making things smaller or larger than the standard, or teaching others to make them, not giving permission to trim nails, etc., decorating, trimming hair, etc. that damage the sign, and trimming places that should not be trimmed, etc., are considered to be in accordance with the items that diminish the sign of ordination. Holding an alms bowl and begging is a sign, and also because of other shapes, made of other materials, smaller than the standard, larger than the standard, holding gray, it should also be known to be in accordance with the items that diminish the sign. What arises from the root of begging and using is accepting gold and silver, which is in accordance with the items that contradict abandonment.
