And, it is for the purpose of teaching the arising dharmas, as it is said: Falling and arising and rising, the arising dharma is the Vinaya. Why is it called Abhidharma? It is for manifestation, continuity, subjugation, and realization, as it is said: For manifestation and non-cessation, for subjugation and realization is Abhidharma. Thus, what is manifested by combining four meanings even for one? Therefore, in the sutras it is said: Sutra, Vinaya, Abhidharma dharma, in short, four meanings are explained. If the wise know these, they will attain supreme Bodhi. Why do the Tathagatas establish the three pitakas? The Sutra Pitaka is established to counteract the near afflictions of doubt. The Vinaya Pitaka is established to counteract the near afflictions that possess two extremes. The Abhidharma Pitaka is established to counteract the near afflictions of holding one's own view as supreme. Again, the Sutra Pitaka is established to express the three trainings. The Vinaya Pitaka is established to accomplish higher discipline and higher mind training. The Abhidharma Pitaka is established to manifest higher wisdom training. Again, the Sutra Pitaka is established to express dharma and meaning. The Vinaya Pitaka is established as the basis for manifesting dharma and meaning. The Abhidharma Pitaka is established to establish speech with a definite connection, to abide in comfort by fully enjoying the dharmas. It is said that after the Teacher's Nirvana, the Vinaya of the Shravakas, including the root, was divided into twenty-two different schools. So, which school's treatise is the Sutra Pitaka now being discussed? This should be understood as the treatise of the root school of the Sarvastivadins among the twenty-two schools. The Sarvastivadins also have a root and branches. Among them, the root is one, namely the Sarvastivadins. The branches that branched out from it are seven, namely the root Sarvastivadins and the Bhadanta school.

And the earth masters, the protectors, the learned, those wearing red robes, and the schools that speak with various distinctions. Among them, the Sarvastivadins say: The three times and names and forms, etc., gather together the conditioned phenomena. Those who are not in accordance with the six, the conditioned phenomena are neither knowable nor discernible. Unconditioned phenomena are of three kinds. Afflictions are those that arise simultaneously in accordance. The Buddha is of two kinds. The Buddha's speech and faculties are only present in the physical body. Offering to stupas has great fruit. Bodhisattvas abandoning the lower realms, some consider it to be of two kinds. Saying that it will become a collection of merit paths, etc., they do not acknowledge, therefore it is called the Sarvastivada school. The views of other schools, and the detailed history of how it initially split into twenty-two schools, are not written here due to limited space. You can refer to the treatises written by Master Vasubandhu and Dulva Lha, which contain detailed explanations. Whether it is lecturing on sutras or anything else, if the necessity, etc., are not explained, those listeners who like to be preconceived will not accept it. Therefore, in order to make the listeners generate joy, it is necessary to explain the necessity, etc. Therefore, here too, according to the same rules, the necessity and connection should be explained. Among them, explaining the necessity is: For example, arguing whether crows have teeth or not, although there is such a saying, but because there is no result, it is necessary to explain the necessity. Necessity refers to, in this case, being able to clarify the meaning of words and sentences, and being able to obtain the ultimate, complete fruit, and obtaining both the complete nirvana. Explaining the connection is: Like the jewel on the head of the dragon king, although it can be used as a cooling medicine and is a beneficial thing, but just like it cannot be obtained with the venomous eyes of the dragon, in order to avoid doubts about not having a method to enter (the Dharma), it is necessary to explain the connection. The so-called connection refers to the connection between cause and effect, that is, the connection between explanation and necessity. Asking questions is necessary to make the listening retinue generate joy.
