Among what is said, "action is causes and conditions," what are those causes? And what are those conditions? There are six causes: co-existent cause, simultaneous cause, similar cause, pervasive cause, ripening cause, and acting cause. Among these, mind and mental factors are mutually co-existent causes. For example, mind is the co-existent cause of feeling, perception, and even wisdom. Wisdom is also the co-existent cause of mind. Simultaneous cause is the mutually resultant dharma. For example, the great elements are mutually dependent, and the basis of names is not the individual characteristics, but those are also its. Similarly, mind is the simultaneous cause of those that follow the mind, and those are also its. Among these, the simultaneous cause exists by mutually relying on strength, in the manner of arising from a solitary place on the path. The co-existent cause exists in the manner of connecting one to another with provisions for the journey. Those that follow the mind are all mental factors, as well as meditative stabilizations and uncontaminated disciplines, and whatever characteristics of conditioned phenomena belong to that mind. Those, together with the mind, are the same in time, birth, duration, and cessation, the same in result, similar cause, and ripening result. If they become virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral minds, then they become virtuous, etc. Therefore, those ten causes of mental followers are called "those that follow the mind." Similar phenomena of one's own ground and one's own class that have arisen earlier are the similar cause for similar phenomena that arise later, in the manner of seed phenomena. All pervasive phenomena belonging to one's own ground that have arisen earlier are the pervasive cause for phenomena of defilement that arise later. Non-virtuous phenomena and virtuous phenomena with outflows are the ripening cause, because they are phenomena that have the nature of transforming into ripening. The arising of phenomena, except for nature, all phenomena are the acting cause by means of entities that do not obstruct or obscure arising. The result of these is all conditioned phenomena and unconditioned phenomena. Those also

There are five fruits: the fruit of the agent, the fruit of similar cause, the fruit of maturation, the fruit of dominance, and the fruit of separation. Among them, the cause that arises simultaneously and equally is the fruit of the agent. By whose power does it arise? That is called the fruit of the agent. The cause of equal share and pervasiveness is the fruit of similar cause, and the dharma similar to the cause is called similar cause. The cause of maturation is the fruit of maturation. Maturing differently from the cause is maturation, which refers to the nature of mind that is unobscured and unspecified. The cause of action is the fruit, for example, eye consciousness is name and form, and farmers are like crops, because they give rise to it by their power. Nirvana is called the fruit of separation, which is to be attained, not to be generated. There are four conditions: causal condition, immediate condition, objective condition, and dominant condition. Among them, the five causes except for the agent cause are causal conditions. The past and present arising minds and mental factors, except for the last mind and mental factors, are the immediate condition of the fruit. The objective condition is all dharmas. The dominant condition is the nature of the agent cause. Space is the nature that separates the accumulated substances when they arise, which is space. If it does not exist, then the accumulated substances cannot arise. O Gautama, what does the earth rely on? The Brahmin said it relies on the golden wheel. What does the golden wheel rely on? It relies on water. What does the water rely on? It relies on wind. What does the wind rely on? The wind relies on space. O Gautama, what does space rely on? The Brahmin said it is too much, the questions cannot be exhausted. However, because there is appearance, space appears. Space is formless, invisible, and unobstructed, so what does it rely on? However, because there is appearance, it is known through space, as the Tathagata also said. This is the nature of space. Through individual examination...
