That which is the all-knowing nature itself, transformed into a stainless mandala, is the stainless mandala of the all-knowing nature. Therefore, I prostrate to that stainless mandala of the all-knowing nature. This also shows the means of accomplishing the benefit of others, because it is difficult for those who are not all-knowing to dispel the many darknesses of ignorance of others that have accumulated since beginningless time. Because of being free from the sleep of ignorance, one becomes a Buddha like an awakened person. Or, because one has perfectly understood the four knowable things—past, future, present, and that which is liberated from time—without any error, one becomes a Buddha. Because one is like dispelling darkness, one is like the sun, hence the sun. Since the Buddha is the sun, it is the Buddha-sun, because it dispels inner and outer darkness. From this verse, it should be understood that one should pay homage to those who perfectly accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. "Prostration" is the characteristic of body, speech, and mind being subdued. By prostrating to the Bhagavan, one accumulates a collection of merit, and with respect and joy for the noble disciples who follow the path of speech spoken by him, another verse is composed. This, beginning with "Those who by the method of Abhidharma," is placed nearby. Among these, the Abhidharma is the wisdom with its retinue, because the ultimate Dharma, Nirvana, is manifest. Its method is the path. Dharma is form and so on. Characteristics are self and general characteristics and so on. Abhidharma itself is the method, so the method of Abhidharma is the way of Abhidharma. Method, way, and reason are synonyms. Ignorance is a dizzy head, which is a synonym for not understanding the meaning of self and general characteristics. Those who, by the method of Abhidharma, uproot and remove the ignorance of the characteristics of Dharma, those are the ones who, by the method of Abhidharma, uproot the ignorance of the characteristics of Dharma. I prostrate to such ones, I prostrate most excellently. "Head" means the crown of the head. Why? Because they possess scripture and realization.

Because it is the basis of the Dharma of the nature of the earth, that is, it becomes the place of the teachings of the All-Knowing One. That itself, called "the place of the teachings of the All-Knowing One," shows the object of the place. The All-Knowing One is the Sugata, and his teachings are the teachings of the All-Knowing One. The place is the basis. The place of the teachings of the All-Knowing One, that is, becoming the support of the teachings of the All-Knowing One, is the meaning of this phrase. To all those who have reached the other shore of the ocean of Dharma Abhidharma, without any distinction, prostration should be done first, stating the qualities, and then, in order to make obeisance to one's own guru, wanting to practice good conduct, therefore, this treatise is composed starting with "by those of inferior intellects," etc. Those who are of weak intellect are the inferior intellects, which is a synonym for weak wisdom. The words that are not well spoken by those of weak wisdom are the badly spoken words. Badly spoken words themselves are darkness, so it is the darkness of badly spoken words. Having the body, speech, and mind capable of endurance is the ability to endure, which is the speech of the Buddha Bhagavan. Being covered by the darkness of badly spoken words is being covered by the darkness of inverted speech, that is, being obscured. By what is well spoken, by the lamp making it appear, that is, making it clear, universally showing. In order for the treatise to dispel what is not understood and to proclaim the true and correct object, therefore the treatise is called a lamp. Or, for the one who made the lamp of Dharma Abhidharma, it is called the one who made the lamp. Because the one who made the lamp made the lamp, therefore obeisance is made to that one who made the lamp. Because he dispelled the darkness of wrong speech, he is called a lamp, like a lamp. To the author of the treatise who correctly shows the nature of Dharma without error, praise is offered with great reverence. Thus, after paying homage to those as desired with three verses, the commentary is composed starting from "some," etc. Because the small, medium, and great intellects are different, the names are not mentioned. The word "is" means "because of what." The Lord of the Able Ones, because he is the Lord of the Able Ones, therefore he is the Lord of the Able Ones. Because there is the body, speech, and mind free from outflows capable of endurance, therefore the Hearers and the Solitary Buddhas are established as the Able Ones. The Bhagavan is because he possesses mastery over all Dharmas.
