Because it is necessary, it is said that only the knowledge of the great self is needed, and others are not mentioned because they can be measured. The term "whoever" refers to the Buddha Bhagavan. Although the word "whoever" is a general term, it will be used in a special sense because it is specifically pointed out, such as "Among these Brahmins, the one who wears white clothes is Laji," like that. Similarly, here, too, "Whoever completely destroys all darkness, saves beings from the mire of samsara, and truly proclaims the truth, I prostrate to him," here the word "whoever" is uniquely associated with the Buddha Bhagavan. It is impossible for anyone other than the Buddha to have such a difference in qualities. Therefore, the term "whoever" refers to the Buddha Bhagavan. The term Buddha means Buddha because of the vastness of wisdom, like a lotus flower blooming, which means fully open. Another explanation is that because one is free from the two sleeps of ignorance, one is a Buddha, like a person waking up from sleep, which means fully awake. The term Bhagavan is mentioned to avoid the suspicion of disrespect, as there are no similar words in the world to express it, which would seem disrespectful, like the word "Laji." Those who explain the Vinaya divide it into four cases: some are Buddhas but not Bhagavans. Because Pratyekabuddhas are self-born, they cannot be called Buddhas, and because the accumulations of generosity and so on are not fully complete, they are not Bhagavans; whoever possesses the great self is called Bhagavan. Some are Bhagavans but not Buddhas, such as the Bodhisattva of the last existence, because the perfections of wisdom and so on are fully complete, but they have not yet attained complete enlightenment. Some are both, such as the Buddha Bhagavan. Some are neither, such as those who are not the above-mentioned cases.

Therefore, it is said that the two distinctions are mentioned as "Buddha, the Bhagavan." By "this" or "by this" destroying darkness, hence called "destroyer of darkness." If combined with the multiple meanings of the sixth case, it means "destroying by the path," implying the path is the agent. If combined with the multiple meanings of the third case, it means "of the path," implying the agent. Leaving others aside for now, the main point here is to explain the two ways of combining words: "Destroying" means being free from harm, in order to fully encompass the two meanings of "destroying." When the words are combined as "destroying the darkness by this," then "destroying" is understood as the meaning of being free from, meaning "free from the darkness of this." When combined with the multiple meanings of the third case, "destroying" is understood as the meaning of harming, meaning "causing harm to this darkness." Similarly, the next two words are also combined into one word, and finally added, "Because of destroying darkness in all ways for all beings, it is the one who completely destroys the darkness of all beings." "For all beings" refers to the knowable objects of the nature of the twelve sources. It is said in the sutra, "Brahmin, all all is as many as the twelve sources." "In all ways" refers to being free from the various forms of darkness, that is, afflictive and non-afflictive. If someone asks, "Does the darkness mentioned here refer to the darkness of night?" The answer is no. Ignorance is an obstacle to seeing the true meaning, therefore it is called darkness. The word darkness usually refers to the darkness of night, because it is an obstacle to seeing tangible objects such as pots and cloths. It makes people like the blind, therefore it is darkness. Ignorance is also similar to it, it is an obstacle to seeing the true meaning, that is, the truths of suffering and so on, therefore it is named darkness. This refers to ignorance. Having obtained the antidote, that is, having obtained the noble path. Because the unfavorable side is affliction, and the side that destroys the unfavorable side is the antidote.
