Why do some trees have leaves, flowers, and fruits, while some trees have no leaves, no flowers, and no fruits? The answer is: For six months the sun is in the north. When the sun is in the north, the rays of the sun come from forty thousand yojanas and fall on the continents. Then, the water of the great ocean becomes cold. That cold water also enters the continents. Those trees that grow easily because of the cold water have leaves, flowers, and fruits; those trees that do not grow easily because of the cold water have no leaves, no flowers, and no fruits. Therefore, some summer trees have leaves, flowers, and fruits, while some trees have no leaves, no flowers, and no fruits. Why do some winter trees have leaves, flowers, and fruits, while some trees have no leaves, no flowers, and no fruits? The answer is: For six months the sun is in the south. When the sun is in the south, the rays of the sun come from forty thousand yojanas and fall into the great ocean. Therefore, the water of the great ocean becomes warm. That warm water also enters the continents. Those trees that grow easily because of the warm water have leaves, flowers, and fruits; those trees that do not grow easily because of the warm water have no leaves, no flowers, and no fruits. Therefore, some winter trees have leaves, flowers, and fruits, while some trees have no leaves, no flowers, and no fruits. Why is it called cotton? The answer is: The cotton that arose from the wish-fulfilling tree of the people of the first kalpa is produced from a similar cause, therefore it is called cotton. Why is it called winter? The answer is: The shrubs of the forest that the people of the first kalpa became are produced from a similar cause.

That is what arises from karma, therefore it is called winter. Why are some trees crooked and some straight? It is said: It is due to the power of the wind. Those trees on which the winds are harmonious become straight. Those trees on which the winds are not harmonious are crooked. Therefore, some trees are crooked and some are straight. Why do trees in one area moistened by the same water have different colors, different marks, and different shapes, not having the same color, not having the same mark, and not having the same shape? It is said: It is due to the power of the seed. As the seed is, so the earth also takes the essence of the earth, the water also takes the essence of the water, the fire also takes the essence of the fire, and the wind also takes the essence of the wind. Therefore, in one area moistened by the same water, trees have different colors, different marks, and different shapes, not having the same color, not having the same mark, and not having the same shape. Why do all trees have spirits, and are not devoid of spirits? It is said: At the time of the formation of the world, the lord of the spirits who makes the trees appear resided in a large sandalwood tree. The remaining spirits resided in those other non-sandalwood trees. Because they first resided there, they passed on from one to another, and other spirits also resided there. The spirits made the trees their abode because the trees were without defilement, like the site of a stupa, pure, pleasing, and worthy of reverence, and had become without defilement, like the site of a stupa, had become pure, had become pleasing, and had become worthy of reverence. Therefore, all trees have spirits, and are not devoid of spirits. This is the occasion for the reasoning of the Dharma, which eliminates confusion about actions, meaning, cause, and effect, enables one to attain good rebirths, prevents one from turning into a painful result, and (leads to) the Buddhas and...
