If on another face, how can a shadow arise? For there is no other face where the sun does not shine. If you do not allow different directions, how can one atom be obscured by another atom? If any atom has no different parts, from where will it come to obstruct another? If there is no obstruction, everything should become one mass, and all aggregates would become just the size of an atom, which has already been said. Shadow and obstruction are not properties of atoms, but do you not want them to be properties of aggregates either? Do you think that aggregates are different from atoms, or are those atoms part of the aggregate? Reply: They are. If the aggregate is not different, are those atoms not part of it? If the aggregate is not different from the atoms, then it is established that those atoms are not part of the aggregate. This is the distinction established by ultimate wisdom. If the characteristics of form and so on are not refuted, what is the point of thinking, 'This is an atom' or 'This is an aggregate'? What are their characteristics? They are the objects of the eye and so on, and the nature of blue and so on. If you claim that the objects of the eye are blue, yellow, and so on, is this one single substance or many? This should be investigated. What is the point of thinking this? The determination of many has already been explained. If it is one, there is no gradual movement, no simultaneous reaching and not reaching, no distinct multiple entities, and no fineness invisible to the eye. If the object of the eye is blue, yellow, and so on, and if you realize that this is a non-differentiated substance, then there should be no gradual movement, because one step would reach everywhere. It is not possible to simultaneously reach this part and not reach that part, because at that time, reaching and not reaching would be illogical. Multiple distinct entities such as elephants and horses cannot reside in one place. If you allow residence in one place, and others also reside in that same place, how can they be distinct? How can the obstruction and non-obstruction allowed by those two be one, since there is a perceptible space between them? If, due to different characteristics, you can only realize that it is a different object and not non-different from it, then even small water creatures should have the same form as large ones.

Because they are the same, they will not disappear because of the eyes. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the different minute particles, as they will not become one. Because they have not become one, form and so on will also not become the objects of the eyes and so on, but will only become consciousness. If relying on valid cognition, then existence and non-existence can be distinguished, and among all valid cognitions, direct perception is the most supreme. If that thing does not exist, then how does the thought "This is my direct perception" arise? The thought of direct perception is like dreams and so on, it has already been said before that even without things, they will appear. Moreover, when at that time, your thing does not appear, how do you consider it to be direct perception? When the direct perception thought arises that "This object is my direct perception," your thing does not appear, because it has been completely cut off by the mind consciousness, and the eye consciousness also ceases at that time. In particular, if it is said that it is momentary, then how is it considered to be direct perception? In that case, at that time, form and taste and so on have already disappeared. Without experience, the mind consciousness will not remember, so it will definitely experience things, but that is something that has not been seen. If it is thought that its object, form and so on, is direct perception, then experience is the recollection of things. This is not established, just like the consciousness that appears there, it has already been said. For example, without things appearing as things, just like the arising of eye consciousness and so on, it has already been said. It is only recollection. From that consciousness, the appearance similar to recollection, discriminating form and so on, the mind consciousness arises, and from the arising of recollection, experiencing things is not established. For example, just like the object of dream consciousness does not exist. If it is like that even when not asleep, then just like that, if there is not, the kinds that the world understands on their own, it is not like that either. Therefore, if it is thought that just like dreams, all the appearances of things are not meaningless, then this is not a correct reason, just like this: seeing a dream, one does not realize that there is no object until one wakes up.
