Commentary on the Twenty Verses. Dignāga. Commentary on the Twenty Verses. Dignāga. In Sanskrit: Viṃśikāvṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Twenty Verses. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! For the Great Vehicle, the three realms are established as being only mind. As it says in the sutra: 'O sons of the Victorious Ones, know this: these three realms are only mind.' Therefore. Mind, intellect, consciousness, and discrimination are all synonyms. Here, mind is understood to include its concomitants. The word 'only' is stated to negate objects. This consciousness appears as an object. For example, those with cataracts see hairs, moons, etc., that do not exist. In reality, there are no objects. Here, someone objects: If consciousness is not an object, then there would be no certainty of place and time, and the mind would not arise from it, and actions would not be reasonable. How can this be explained? If it is said that consciousness of form, etc., arises without the existence of objects such as form, etc., and not from objects such as form, etc., then why does it arise in some places and not in all places? Even in the same place, it arises sometimes and not always? In the minds of all those dwelling in that place and time, it does not necessarily arise, but only in the minds of a few? Just as hairs, etc., appear only in the mind of someone with cataracts. But not in the minds of others. Why do the hairs seen by someone with cataracts not produce the actions of hairs, etc., by bees, etc., while others without cataracts do? The food, drink, clothing, poison, weapons, etc., seen in dreams do not produce the actions of food, drink, etc., while other real food, drink, etc., do? Gandharva cities do not exist, so they do not produce the actions of cities, while other real cities do? If these are all like non-existent things, then the certainty of place and time, the uncertainty of mind, and the performance of actions would also be unreasonable, wouldn't they? It is not unreasonable, because: places, etc., are established as certain, like dreams! Because it is like dreaming in a dream, it is called a dream. How is it understood? Even in dreams, without objects, places such as towns, gardens,

Whether male or female, etc., although they appear, they do not appear at all times and places. Sometimes they appear in that place, and sometimes they do not. Therefore, even if it is meaningless, the place, etc., is certainly established. The mind is also uncertain, like a hungry ghost. One should strive for establishment. Because it is the same as the hungry ghosts, it is like a hungry ghost. How is it established? By all beings, such as seeing the river as oneself, etc. The river filled by oneself is one's own river, like a pot of ghee. The hungry ghosts who dwell in the same ripening of karma, all beings equally see the river filled by themselves, not just a part of them. Just as it is filled with pus, it is also filled with urine, vomit, ashes, saliva, snot, feces, and guarded by people holding swords, it is also like that, included in the word "etc.". In this way, even if it is meaningless, the uncertainty of the minds of various consciousnesses is established. Actions are like harm in a dream. It should be understood as established. For example, in a dream, even if the two do not meet, the characteristic of producing semen is the harm in the dream. In this way, for the time being, through various other metaphors, the certainty of place and time, etc., is established. Everything is like hell beings. It should be understood as established. Just as it exists in hell beings, it is like hell beings. How is it established? Seeing hell guards, etc., because they cause harm. For example, in hell beings, the hell beings see hell guards, etc., and the place and time are definitely established. Seeing dogs, crows, and iron mountains, etc., coming and going, is included in the word "etc.". All beings can see it, not just a part of them. The harm they cause to those beings is also established. Even if there are no hell guards, etc., in reality, it is because of the same ripening of their respective karmas. Similarly, all of these four, such as other places and times, should be understood as established. Why are hell guards, crows, and dogs, etc., not considered sentient beings? Because it is unreasonable.
