It should be known. Those (afflictions) do not necessarily cause those (liberations) to arise, because it is shown that even those who are free from desire have that realm (liberation). When are desire, hatred, and harm all abandoned at the same time? Why are their liberations described as different? Although their liberations are simultaneous, the three modes of liberation are shown by the difference in the cultivation of antidotes. The difference in antidotes is this: the contemplation of impurity, loving-kindness, and compassion are applied in order. Some attain complete liberation through the cultivation of impurity. Some attain liberation through loving-kindness. Some attain liberation through compassion. Therefore, (the Buddha) taught different modes of liberation. Before that, there is only one kind of antidote, so there is no difference before that. If views are dominant, how can one always remember desires? It is said: Because of the practice of discriminating thought, because of the practice of mainly thinking about things, and because of the practice of mainly thinking about enjoyment. How can the mind not engage in desires? Because it is not seen as beneficial. How can it not become the initial (cause)? Because the joy and pleasure that arise there are not cultivated. How can it not be pervasive? Because one does not delight in the joy of proximity. How can one not develop attachment? Because one does not adhere to signs that are not in accordance with the proper way. How can one make it recede? When it increases, one does not engage. How can one separate it? Abandoning the object that is grasped. How can one not engage? After discriminating, when grasping that object, one does not rejoice. How does one abide in equanimity? Placing it in a state of equality, that is, abiding the mind in a state of equality. What is aversion? Seeing faults there, thereby transforming into displeasure. That is also of three kinds, namely, impermanence, suffering, and the nature of change. What is reproach? First seeing faults, thereby being displeased.

What is it that becomes that state? What is turning back? In the second case, seeing the faults, what is it that becomes a state of disagreement? What is the state of disagreement? In the third case, seeing the faults, what is it that becomes the very state of disagreement? Turning back from that, one should focus on renunciation. Entering is because one sees the benefits in that. Joy is because manifest joy arises through faith and conviction. Abiding is because one does not stray from that object of focus. Liberation is because of being separated from afflictions, because of entering into that with a non-afflicted mind. When one abides in states of disagreement such as aversion, the mind does not deteriorate, and even if it becomes equanimity, there is no effort. How does the mind go to ease? Because it abides in the ultimate application of mindfulness. How is it well cultivated? Because it is well cultivated from other mindfulness. Therefore, the stage of abandonment and the stage of the path of abandonment will also be shown. In that, liberation is because of being completely freed from all entanglements. Liberation is because of being freed from the signs of the object of focus. Utter liberation is because of being freed from latent tendencies. What are the outflows that arise from the cause of his desire? Other than the desire for desire, what are the afflictions that act in desire? Poverty refers to what arises from the very basis of the difference in improper conduct, such as cutting off. If one does and accumulates, one will be born in the lower realms. Complete burning refers to what is the complete burning of body and mind when eating with craving for desire from that basis. Disturbances refer to what arises from that basis, the complete transformation of its objects, sorrow and lamentation, suffering and unpleasant disturbances. Liberation is standing up from them, called separation and complete separation, and also, as before, is liberation from all entanglements, objects of focus, and latent tendencies.
