The suchness that is without distinction between the apprehended and the apprehender, the expressible and the expresser, is the characteristic of the nature of reality. That which is without distinction between the apprehended and the apprehender, and that which is without distinction between the expressible and the expresser, is suchness, and that is also the characteristic of the nature of reality. The very absence of distinction is because it is non-dual as is the order, and because it is inexpressible. That in which there is no distinction is called the absence of distinction. This is the apprehended. This is the apprehender, or this is the expressible. This is the expresser, if there are two, the expressible and the expresser, then there will be distinction. Because there is none of that, it is the suchness of non-distinction. That which is called "that is also the characteristic of the nature of reality" indicates that the characteristic of the nature of reality is shown without perversion and completely. What is the characteristic of the Dharma that was previously shown? Because of the appearance of what does not exist, delusion is the cause of all afflictions. Because what does not exist appears, therefore it appears as non-existent, therefore it is only delusion, so it should be understood. Therefore, it is also the cause of all afflictions, because clinging to it will cause three kinds of all afflictions to arise in the future. How does the non-existent appear? It is said, "Like the appearance of illusory elephants, etc." For example, illusory elephants, etc., and wealth and grains, etc., do not exist as they appear. Although they appear, they are not real, and similarly, unreal conceptualizations also appear even though they do not exist. Furthermore, what exists also does not appear. The term "delusion" follows, meaning that the two non-existent things, the existing things do not appear, so it is also delusion. The form of pillars and people, the existing and non-existing things, whichever does not appear and appears, is the characteristic of delusion, because it has not been abandoned in the world. Furthermore, why is it not desirable for either the non-existent or the appearing things to be missing? It is said, "If either the non-existent or the appearing things are missing, it will lead to delusion and non-

, and complete defilement and complete purification are unreasonable. If it only becomes non-existent and does not appear, then because of non-existence, there will be no delusion, because non-existence is not deluded by non-existence itself. If there is no delusion, then non-delusion will also not exist, because non-delusion precedes delusion. Therefore, complete defilement will also not exist, because it is the cause of delusion. If it does not exist, then complete purification will also not exist, because complete purification precedes complete defilement. Therefore, if it does not exist, then liberation will occur effortlessly, which contradicts direct perception. However, if it only becomes appearance and does not become non-existent, then even so, because non-existence does not exist, there will be no delusion, because if appearance is completely established as its own nature, there will be no non-delusion. If delusion does not exist, then like before, the remainder will also not exist. Therefore, the actions of a person will become meaningless, which contradicts reason. In the world, too, the name of delusion is given to mounds of earth and people who are established separately. The nature of phenomena as they appear, which is twofold, and the nature of phenomena without distinction, have been explained. If that is the case, then are phenomena and suchness asserted to be one, or are they thought to be different? It is said: The two are neither one nor separate, because existence and non-existence are not different. The two, namely phenomena and suchness, are not considered to be the same or different. Why is that? Because existence and non-existence also have difference and no difference. For the time being, phenomena and suchness are not unreasonable, why is that? Because existence and non-existence have difference. Suchness is existent, while phenomena are non-existent, so how can existence and non-existence, which are different, become one? Nor are they separate. Why? Because existence and non-existence have no difference. How is there no difference? Because suchness is distinguished only by the non-existence of phenomena, because there is no difference in what is grasped, etc. Phenomena and phenomena
