Commentary on Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata Vasubandhu Commentary on Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata Vasubandhu In Sanskrit: Dharma dharmatāvibhaṅgavṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata. Homage to the Bhagavan Ajita! Ajita, knowing that the world has gone astray by mistakenly grasping the meaning as sound, you compiled the teachings and spoke this treatise. After paying homage to that lama with folded hands, having heard from the lamas and by their grace, in order to condense the words, I will strive to distinguish the profound meaning of this treatise from each word, according to my own ability. Because some should be abandoned after knowing them, and some others should be directly realized, therefore, desiring to distinguish them from the perspective of their characteristics, this treatise is made. Because some should be abandoned after knowing them, and some others should be directly realized. This means that, in order, it is spoken with regard to dharma, which is the nature of all afflictions, and dharmata, which is completely transformed and well distinguished by the place of the nature of purity. To distinguish them from the perspective of their characteristics means that it is not from the perspective of different objects. The rest is just understanding the meaning. It is said: To distinguish them from the perspective of their characteristics. What is it that distinguishes dharma and dharmata themselves, or is it not something else? Or is it just these? It is not to make a distinction by extracting from many words. What is it then? Whatever the Bhagavan has established, such as the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, in short, all of this is two. Why? Because it is included by dharma and dharmata. The aggregates, elements, and sense bases, if collected, become two types, namely dharma and dharmata. Among them, the term "this" is for the purpose of grasping what is explained in this very teaching. The term "all" is also to show that it is just this much. Because other than that, either it is included in this, or it does not exist. Thus, without any difference,

Having spoken, if someone asks: What encompasses what, such that one cannot distinguish between samsara and nirvana? Therefore, it is said: What is distinguished by dharma is samsara. Because dharma has the characteristic of pervasive affliction, its nature, samsara, is said to be distinguished by dharma. The other case is that what is distinguished by dharmata is the nirvana of the three vehicles. Because nirvana is to be attained by the three vehicles, it is called the nirvana of the three vehicles. It can also be said that it is both the three vehicles and nirvana, so it is called the nirvana of the three vehicles. Among these, dharmata has the characteristic of complete transformation, so the nirvana encompassed by it is said to be distinguished by dharmata. Although samsara and nirvana are thus distinguished by dharma and dharmata, because their characteristics have not been explained, if someone asks: What are the characteristics of these (dharma and dharmata)? Such that one does not understand dharma itself. Therefore, to explain its characteristics, it is said: What appears as duality and how it appears to be expressed is unreal parikalpita, which is the characteristic of dharma. Appearing as two and how it appears to be expressed is two and how it appears to be expressed. Among these, the object of grasping and the grasped, such as the eye and form, etc., appear as two, and existence and dependence on it, how it appears to be expressed, that is, the essence of the basis for establishing self and difference, that is unreal parikalpita. This is called the characteristic of dharma, thus the characteristic of dharma is completely and without omission explained. Among these, the definitive term of unreal is: because it appears without existing, it is unreal. Because this dharma does not exist, the meaning of the word "parikalpita" and the meaning of the word "kalpana" are: because it is meaningless in all places and is merely conceptualization, it is parikalpita. Meaninglessness itself is also because the nature of appearance is not completely established. Merely conceptualization is because appearance exists only in illusion. The characteristic of dharma has been explained. The characteristic of dharmata is...
