The characteristic of things is emptiness. It is neither existent nor nonexistent. It is neither different nor the same. The summary of emptiness is: Suchness and the ultimate boundary. Signlessness and ultimate meaning, And the realm of phenomena are different names. It is not other, not inverted. This is the realm of activity for the noble ones who eliminate afflictions, And it is the cause of the noble ones' Dharma. These different names, in their order of meaning, are: Completely purifying all afflictions. That is with defilements and without defilements. Like the water element, gold, and the sky, It is desired to be pure as if pure. That which eats, that which is eaten, and its body, The emptiness of the basis of the place. How and by whom is that seen? Why is that also emptiness? In order to obtain the two merits, In order to always benefit sentient beings, In order not to abandon samsara, In order to accomplish inexhaustible merit, In order to also purify lineage, In order to obtain marks and signs, In order to purify all Buddha Dharmas, The Bodhisattva practices. In the case of individuals and all phenomena, This absence of things is emptiness. The real existence of that absence of things, That is other than that emptiness. If afflictions were not that, All embodied beings would be liberated. If purification were not that, Effort would become fruitless. It is not affliction, not non-delusion. That is not pure, not impure. From the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes" treatise, the chapter called "Nature" is the first chapter. Complete, partial, and excessive, Equality, acceptance, and abandonment are, Showing the two obscurations. The nature of afflictions has nine aspects. All bonds are obstacles. Weariness and equanimity, And merely seeing, Destruction, Assembly view and its basis, Cessation, path, and the Three Jewels, Gain and respect, And stinginess with resources in omniscience, Other than the ten virtues, etc., Non-bondage and non-birth place, What is produced by non-yoga, and, Non-birth and non-attention, Assembly is not fully complete, and, Without lineage and bad friends, and, The mind is completely weary, and, Without diligence, and, Associating with evil and hateful people, and, From one's own three evil places, The remaining wisdom is immature, and, By nature, it is an evil place.

Laziness and also carelessness, attachment to power and enjoyment, a disheartened mind, distrust and displeasure, acting like a parrot, not particularly valuing the excellent Dharma, being arrogant when gaining and having no compassion, being poor in hearing and having little learning, not having practiced meditation. Holding virtue and enlightenment correctly, being wise, unerring, and without obscurations, dedicating and not fearing, without stinginess, freedom is virtue, etc. Those obscurations should be known as groups of three. The ten causes of action are: birth, dwelling, basis, and what is to be taught, change, separation, otherness, faith, understanding, and attainment, like the eye, food, earth, lamp, fire, etc. are examples of that. An axe, craftsmanship, smoke, cause and path, etc. are others. Regarding direction and reaching the other shore, obscurations are otherness. Not being skilled in the ground and laziness, these two cause the decline of meditation, not arising and weakness, wrong views and the faults of taking birth in bad places. Wealth and the good realms, not abandoning sentient beings are obscurations, faults, etc. and qualities, decreasing, increasing, and adding, liberation and inexhaustibility, virtuous actions continuing without interruption, determination and all phenomena, enjoying and fully ripening, universally acting for the supreme benefit, the supreme nature of the meaning of the same cause, the meaning of non-apprehension, the meaning of non-difference of all continuums, the meaning of non-purity of afflictions, the nature of non-difference, the meaning of non-decrease and non-increase, freedom is the place of four aspects. Not recognizing the realm of Dharma, the ten obscurations that are not of an afflicted nature, the antidotes to the unfavorable aspects of the ten grounds are the grounds themselves. The obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge are thus declared. There, all obscurations, when they are exhausted, liberation is said. From the treatise "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes," the second chapter on obscurations. The root nature is only that, the nature of non-inversion, the result is only that of the cause, coarse and subtle, fame and the extremely pure object, the nature of collection and distinction, the ten aspects of the wise one are the antidote to the view of self.
