The Treatise on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. Maitreya. The Treatise on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. Maitreya. ༄༅།།Here begins the Treatise on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. In Sanskrit: Madhyāntavibhaṅgakārikā. In Tibetan: The Treatise on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! The characteristic obscuration is only this, the antidotes are meditation and so on, its place and fruit, one obtains the unsurpassed Great Vehicle. Unreal imagination exists, in it the two do not exist, emptiness exists in this, in it also this exists. Neither empty nor not empty, thus all is taught, by existence, by non-existence, by existence, this is the Middle Way. Meaning and sentient beings, self and consciousness, the nature of appearing consciousness, arises, but it has no meaning, because it does not exist, it also does not exist. The nature of unreal imagination, therefore it is established, not like that, it is completely non-existent, when it ceases, it is said to be liberation. What is imputed is dependent origination, and the perfectly established nature as well, for the sake of meaning and for the sake of unreal imputation, it is said that both are non-existent. Relying on the object, the non-object arises, relying on the non-object, the non-object arises. Therefore, the nature of the object, is established as the nature of the non-object, therefore, the object and the non-object should be known as equal. The nature of unreal imagination, mind and mental events, the nature of the three realms, in it the consciousness that sees meaning, its difference arises from the mind. One is the consciousness of conditions, the second is the one who engages closely, engaging closely and the one who cuts off completely, its function arises from the mind. For the sake of obscuring and for the sake of planting, for the sake of guiding and for the sake of universal grasping, for the sake of perfecting and for the sake of cutting off the three, for the sake of near cutting off and for the sake of gathering, for the sake of joining and for the sake of manifesting, for the sake of suffering, wandering afflictions. Three kinds and two kinds are also afflictions, seven kinds arise from unreal imagination. Emptiness, if briefly summarized, nature and synonyms, its meaning and distinctions, establishment and so on should be known. Two are unreal and not unreal.
