Before them. Or, some say it should be combined with the six superknowledges. It is said that confession is to verbally state, "I did this." Repentance is to look at their various faults, hold displeasure in the mind, and point out their faults. Not concealing is not thinking that the sins I have committed will be noticed by others, and not thinking of ways to cover them up. Also, guarding in the future is to completely guard with antidotes, not allowing the previous to be repeated, and completely cutting off the continuity. These also show the four powers that exhaust the sins I have done and accumulated, namely the power of reliance, the power of refutation, the power of universally applying antidotes, and the power of restoration. Among them, the reliance on which to confess obscurations is the Three Jewels, taking refuge in the Tathagatas, and prostrating is the power of reliance. Closely recalling the deeds done, considering them as the source of many faults, regretting in the mind, and saying that oneself is guilty is the power of refutation. Thinking of this and that antidote, and preventing them from happening again, is the power of universally applying antidotes and the power of restoration. If one thinks of these four powers in the mind and recites them from the bottom of one's heart, karmic obscurations will be completely reduced. As it is said, "Maitreya, these four dharmas can completely reduce the sins done and accumulated, what are the four? Namely, the power of reliance, the power of refutation, the power of universally applying antidotes, and the power of restoration." Therefore, all bodhisattvas who want to exhaust their sins should remember this sutra often, and should recite it. Thus it is said. After confessing karmic obscurations in this way, now, because the roots of virtue that I have done are not held by correct dedication, there will be no fruition, or even if there is fruition, it will be small. In order to transcend the ocean of samsara, one should dedicate the roots of virtue. This is like gold mined from a source, if it is made into ornaments by a skilled blacksmith, it will become an item needed by oneself, others, and close ones.

Just like that, it becomes the desired result. Among these, the objects to whom dedication and prayer should be directed are those called Buddhas, and so on. The merit to be dedicated is 'mine,' and so on. 'Mine,' and so on, is the same as before. The nature of merit is threefold: arising from generosity, arising from ethical conduct, and arising from meditation. Among these, that arising from generosity is generosity, even down to the smallest act. Becoming a vessel for great generosity includes the generosity of Dharma, the generosity of fearlessness, the generosity of love, and the generosity of material things, such as completely giving away one's eyes and other possessions. Especially for those who are particularly excellent, it includes giving away one's children and so on, who are included among external sentient beings, and other things such as the four continents. It also includes giving away royal power, half of it, territory, regions, towns, and so on, as well as food, drink, and so on. Even giving a single mouthful of food to a being born in an animal realm is included, even if the place and object are extremely inferior. All the merit arising from ethical conduct is encompassed by the vows of individual liberation, maintaining the common ethical conduct from fully ordained monks down to lay practitioners. That which belongs solely to the ordained is solely abiding in celibacy. That which is solely under the control of a Bodhisattva is to fully ripen all sentient beings and the root of merit of the mind of enlightenment, namely, ripening sentient beings through action and never abandoning the mind of enlightenment through thought. Only this is the pure ethical conduct of a Bodhisattva. If it is not like this, even if one does not separate from non-virtue for hundreds of thousands of eons in the ten paths of virtuous action, it cannot be called virtuous ethical conduct. If one strives with such thought and action, even if one engages in activities mixed with the five desirable qualities, it is still called pure ethical conduct. As the Blessed Mother also said: 'Even if a Bodhisattva enjoys the five desirable qualities, having gone for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and noble Sangha, if one thinks of achieving Buddhahood and focuses on omniscience, the wise one has crossed over to the other shore of ethical conduct.'
