The so-called "knowing" refers to the forbearance that accords with the inexhaustible dharmas. Combination refers to attention. Definite attention refers to knowing without perversion. Non-distraction refers to the absence of distraction. Knowing without relying on others refers to knowing without needing to rely on others. Knowing by thoroughly distinguishing refers to distinguishing and knowing the characteristics of the inexhaustible dharmas separately without confusing them. The Buddha's dharma refers to powers and fearlessness, etc. The so-called "cause" refers to the meaning of being the basis and support that leads to the ten directions. The so-called "rightly engaging in this cause" means that if you practice this category of dharma, it is equivalent to practicing all categories of dharma. The so-called "protecting the true dharma" refers to protecting the teaching of the dharma without obstacles. The so-called "will embrace all sentient beings" means that you will benefit all sentient beings. Strength refers to the servants of the retinue of demons. Guarding, rescuing, and concealing are liberation from the three types of non-virtuous actions. Among them, liberation from the karma of experiencing in this life is guarding. Liberation from the karma of experiencing after birth is rescuing. Liberation from the karma of experiencing in future lives is concealing. Alternatively, there are two types of harm that arise: arising from one's own causes and arising from the causes of others. There are also two types of arising from the causes of others: arising from the causes of non-sentient numbers and arising from the causes of sentient numbers. Arising from the causes of one's own karma is guarding. Liberation from the harm of non-sentient numbers, such as wind and heat, is rescuing. Liberation from the harm of sentient numbers, such as beating and binding, is concealing. The so-called "take the knife from the heart" means that through the great gate of differentiation, you do not need to strive. Holding the true dharma, it should be made to abide in the world for a long time and not be allowed to disappear. The so-called "final five hundred years of the degenerate age" is to show the way in which the Tathagata's dharma increases and decreases, and to explain the difference of the times. For example, if a person's life can live to be one hundred years old, then up to fifty years old is the period of growth, the body, wisdom, and abilities, etc., increase and arise.

Thus, after fifty years had passed, the subsequent fifty years were a time of decline. The body, wisdom, abilities, and so on, greatly deteriorated and diminished, ultimately facing old age and death, and becoming exhausted. Similarly, the time for the teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni to bear fruit and flourish greatly was one thousand years in Jambudvipa. Dividing it in half, the first five hundred years were considered a time of increase, and the latter five hundred years were considered a time of decline. The increase refers to the period before Shakyamuni Buddha passed into Nirvana at the age of eighty. During that time, Bodhisattvas and Shravakas, and other noble beings from the ten directions, matured their roots of virtue, and the remaining beings were also greatly liberated. Other gods and humans, and so on, were also taught and manifested by the Tathagata himself, fully matured and liberated, thus making it easier to attain results. Thereafter, for the five hundred years after the Buddha's Nirvana, Bodhisattvas and great Shravakas greatly cherished the Buddha's teachings and existed widely in Jambudvipa. They also fully matured and liberated countless gods and humans, and so on, thereby attaining results. For example, in that era, there was a legend that a noble Shravaka named Upagupta also upheld the Buddha's teachings and saved countless beings. He wrote down the number of beings he had saved on wooden tablets and piled them up, so much so that they filled his room. Furthermore, that Bhikshu also subdued demons. At another time, when that Bhikshu was meditating, a demon came before him and mischievously placed a garland of flowers on his head. Afterwards, that Bhikshu also realized this and thought, 'Now is the time to subdue that demon.' He transformed into a dog corpse filled with worms and tied a "se mo dor" rope to the demon's body, blessing it so that the demon could not discard it. Afterwards, the demon could not discard it himself, so he went to Indra to ask for help, but Indra did not help him either. Then he went to Brahma, but Brahma did not liberate him either. Finally, he said that he felt guilty for putting flowers on the Bhikshu's head, and went to the Bhikshu.
