Again, starting with the one named Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the application to that is shown by "calm abiding and insight are inexhaustible" and so on. Again, starting with the one named Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the obtaining of prophecy is shown by "dharani and fearlessness are inexhaustible" and so on. Again, starting with the one named Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the establishment of the obtaining of that is shown by "the four Dharma sutras are inexhaustible" and so on. Again, starting with the one named Venerable Sharadvatiputra, self-enlightenment is shown by "the one vehicle path is inexhaustible" and so on. Again, starting with the one named Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the excellent turning of the wheel of Dharma is shown by "skillful means are inexhaustible" and so on. The meaning of the words is for the sake of understanding the meaning of the summary, that is, the meaning of "Thus have I heard, at one time" and so on, is what extensively shows. Among these, the introduction is the cause of the arising of the sutras, and it is spoken everywhere in order to make those who have truly gathered have faith. That is also well distinguished by the place and the teacher and the retinue being complete, that is, in what place, who, and with whom did they abide and explain this Dharma category? It is connected in this way. Among these, the place is shown by "the collection of all qualities is immeasurable" and so on. The teacher is shown by "the deeds of the Buddha are spontaneously accomplished, and the continuity is uninterrupted" and so on. The retinue is shown by "the Bodhisattvas who cannot be expressed" and so on. Among these, "Thus have I heard, at one time" and so on are the words of the noble gatherers, and "Thus" and so on are in this sutra.

English
It refers to the eighty inexhaustible things that arise from below. The term "Thus have I heard" does not mean hearing idle talk from others, but rather that the compiler himself heard it directly from the Bhagavan through the ear faculty. The term "at one time" refers to the Tathagata for the benefit of many beings. Because at other times he taught the sutras and performed other deeds for sentient beings, it is said that this sutra was taught at one time, which is a conventional expression. Gathering in two ways also refers to hearing other dharmas at other times, and hearing this sutra once at one time. Therefore, hearing it once at one time implies that the compiler heard a lot and was able to retain it. The term "Bhagavan" refers to the one who possesses the ability to conquer obstacles. Here, obstacles refer to the four maras that hinder the attainment of unsurpassed Bodhi. The four maras are the Mara of the Son of the Gods, the Mara of Afflictions, the Mara of the Aggregates, and the Mara of Death. Among them, the Mara of the Son of the Gods was conquered by the samadhi of loving-kindness under the Bodhi tree; the Mara of Afflictions was also conquered at the time of manifest enlightenment; the Mara of the Aggregates was also conquered at the time of manifest enlightenment by the complete transformation of the Alaya consciousness; and the Mara of Death was also conquered there in the great city of Vaisali by postponing nirvana for three months and thus gaining control over life. Alternatively, because he possesses excellent qualities, he is called "Bhagavan." The so-called excellent qualities refer to power, beauty, fame, splendor, wisdom, and diligence. Among them, power refers to possessing supreme and incomparable enjoyment in both the mundane and supramundane realms. Beauty refers to possessing the thirty-two major marks of a great being and the eighty minor marks. Fame refers to the perfection of mundane and supramundane qualities, with fame spreading in all directions. Splendor refers to the fulfillment of one's own wishes, like a wish-fulfilling tree and a wish-fulfilling jewel, capable of satisfying all sentient beings.
