One should completely abandon evil companions. You should attend to, respect, and serve those virtuous spiritual friends who teach that all phenomena are emptiness, signlessness, and so on. From "You should attend to and serve," son of good family, you should generate great respect for the virtuous spiritual friend. You should be impoverished. You should be extremely delighted. A bodhisattva mahasattva who is embraced by a virtuous spiritual friend will quickly awaken to unsurpassable, perfect, complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. Mindfulness of the Buddha is from the Sutra of Passing Beyond Sorrow: It is said that whoever cultivates and diligently practices one dharma will obtain the dharma that purifies and cleanses all beings' sorrow, suffering, and turmoil, namely, the samadhi of mindfulness of the Buddha. Thus it is said. From the Avatamsaka Sutra: Just as a single seed, though of one flavor, when properly sown, produces sprouts, without discriminating between love and hatred, so it is with offerings to the Buddha. Thus it is said. From the Sutra of the Collection of True Dharmas: For example, although fire exists in all wood, without sufficient causes and effort, the fire will not ignite and will not accomplish what is needed. Similarly, although the Tathagata abides in all that is knowable, without sufficient causes and effort such as faith, he will not appear, and he will not accomplish the deeds of a Buddha. Also, in that same sutra, it says: For example, the earth abides without discrimination or change. If someone desires benefit and prays to it, a bountiful harvest will result. If not, it will not change. Similarly, the Tathagata abides without discrimination or change. Those who desire qualities and generate faith, joy, and respect for the Tathagata will obtain a bountiful harvest of qualities. If not, it will not change. Thus it is said. Also, in that sutra, it says: Son of good family, a bodhisattva can realize Buddhahood through ten ways of entering the Dharma, namely: the Buddha of corresponding cause, the Buddha born from maturation, the Buddha of samadhi, the Buddha of aspiration, the Buddha of mind, and the Buddha of essence.

The Buddhas of the present, the Buddhas of perfect enjoyment, the Buddhas of emanation, the Buddhas established by name, and the Buddhas who are present, are extensively spoken of. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it is also said: The true Buddha is the Dharmakaya, Without mixture and without dwelling. For the sake of all sentient beings, May they also see the body of form as desired. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of Meeting of Father and Son, it is said: Without hearing the words of others, With the extremely peaceful, difficult to realize, Manifestly enlightened to unsurpassed Bodhi, Who would not believe in his words? Like a father, cherishing all beings, Possessing the ten powers, great compassion, and loving-kindness. With compassion and love liberating beings, To the supreme guide, faith arises. In the afflictions of fear of old age and death, Showing the supreme person without old age and death, Leading beings to the place of immortality, To the supreme guide, faith arises. Thus it is said. In the Lion's Roar Requested by the Goddess Sri, it is said: Bhagavan, the Tathagata has great compassion without end of time for the world, and does not have vows with an end of time. It is with great compassion and vows without end of time that those who call out "Alala" for sentient beings are truly speaking of the Tathagata. In the Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it is also said: Alas! These sentient beings are bound by sons, daughters, homes, wealth, and grain, and perceive what is without essence as having essence. Therefore, impermanence should be taught to them. Therefore, the Tathagata generates great compassion for sentient beings. Alas! These sentient beings live by unrighteousness, dwelling in mutual deception. Therefore, the Dharma of pure livelihood should be taught to them. The Tathagata generates great compassion for sentient beings. Alas! These sentient beings are constantly delighted in the dwelling of the home, which is a vessel of suffering. Therefore, the Dharma of emerging from them and truly transcending the three realms should be taught to them. Great compassion arises for sentient beings. All dharmas approach through causes, and are characterized by abiding through practice.
