It should be examined in the manner of being without characteristics. How can one examine a single, extremely minute particle with subtle higher seeing? How can one know that those minute particles have become the conduct of all formless afflictions? Regarding that which is without entity, without object, without self, separated, and without characteristics, it is thoroughly known that the particle is extremely minute. Thus it was said. Furthermore, from that (it can be known that) those formless aggregates, with the characteristic of emptiness, are destroyed in an extremely short instant and are not permanent. Because the place is not perceived, it is without characteristics. Because it arises and ceases in an instant, it is without aspiration. Therefore, this aggregate is emptiness. Thus it was said. Furthermore, from that (it can be known that), like the characteristic of substance, all three times, every instant and extremely short instant are empty, whatever son of lineage, whether noble or not noble, worldly or beyond worldly, from the body to the vessel, all are momentary, that is, extremely empty and inexpressible. Thus it is said. In the teaching of the noble Inexhaustible Intelligence, it is said: As such, what is the means of a Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? For what reason, when in equipoise, the mind closely attaches to the object of great compassion by looking at sentient beings, that is the means. For what reason, entering into the equipoise of peace and extreme peace, that is the wisdom. Thus it was said. In the Inconceivable Secret, it is said: Whatever merit of the mind of enlightenment, if it had form, it would fill all of space, but it would be even greater than that. Whatever merit of the mind of enlightenment, compared to enumerating all the aggregates, holding the sacred Dharma, its merit is even more excellent. Holding the sacred Dharma and the merit of the mind of enlightenment, for those who are devoted to emptiness, it is not even a sixteenth part. Thus it was said. In the Question of Light Protector, it is said: Light Protector, these four are the qualities of a Bodhisattva: that is, they also have faith in emptiness, and they also have faith in the ripening of karma, and thereby they are also able to endure selflessness, and they have compassion for all sentient beings, and their thought abides in Nirvana, their conduct abides in Samsara, and they

Also, one does not expect the ripening of generosity for the sake of ripening. These are the four, it is said. From the Sutra of the Collection of Righteous Teachings: The one who speaks of emptiness is not robbed by the things of the world. He is not happy when he gains something, and he is not unhappy when he does not gain something. He is not refreshed by fame, and he is not withered by obscurity. He is not disheartened by slander, and he is not delighted by praise. He is not attached to pleasure. Whoever is not robbed by the things of the world in this way, that one knows emptiness. In this way, by not being robbed, one should understand that he speaks of emptiness. The one who speaks of emptiness has no attachment or non-attachment to anything. He knows emptiness in what he is attached to and in what he is not attached to. He sees emptiness. He also knows emptiness in whatever dharma he is attached to and not attached to, and so on. I prostrate to you who possess the power of the ten strengths of truth. I prostrate to you who give the gift of fearlessness and non-fear. You thoroughly understand the unmixed dharmas. I prostrate to you who lead all beings. I prostrate to you who cut the bonds of universal union. I prostrate to you who dwell on the plain of the other shore. I prostrate to you who liberate weary beings. I prostrate to you who do not abide in the beings of samsara. By this merit, may all attain the state of omniscience. Having attained it, having defeated the enemies of evil, may I liberate beings from the ocean of existence from the raging waves of old age, sickness, and death.
