Unsuitable (food) should not be eaten, and food should be eaten in moderation. One should also occasionally ask questions of knowledgeable and experienced people, abandon arrogance, and not mistake the meaning. In this way, Bodhisattvas accumulate all the resources of calm abiding and special insight, and then they should engage in practice. For this, when a yogi practices, first, all tasks should be completely fulfilled, and in a quiet and pleasant place, one should think: 'I shall place all sentient beings in the essence of enlightenment.' With the compassionate intention to liberate all beings, manifest great compassion. Prostrate with five limbs to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions. Place images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, such as paintings, in front, or elsewhere as convenient, and offer and praise them to the best of one's ability. Confess one's own sins and rejoice in the merits of all beings. On a very soft and comfortable cushion, sit in a posture like that of the venerable Vairochana, or in any comfortable lotus position. Do not open the eyes too wide, nor close them too tightly, but focus on the tip of the nose. Do not hunch the body too much, nor straighten it too much, but keep it upright. Sit with mindfulness placed within. Keep the shoulders level, the head neither too high nor too low, and without moving to one side. Keep the line from the nose to the navel straight. Place the tongue against the root of the teeth. The breath flowing in and out should not be noisy, panting, or labored, but in such a way that it is imperceptible, inhaling and exhaling slowly and naturally. For this, the yogi should first settle the mind on the form of the Tathagata, as seen and heard, and thereby practice calm abiding. Contemplate the Buddha's body as golden as refined gold, adorned with excellent marks and signs, residing in the midst of his retinue, benefiting beings through various means. Constantly remember it, generate longing for its qualities, pacify sinking and excitement, and strive to see the Buddha's form clearly, as if truly present before you.

One should meditate until that happens. Also, in the Holy Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: With a body like the color of gold, the protector of the world is beautiful everywhere. Whoever places their mind on that object, that Bodhisattva is called equipoise. Or, regarding objects that are either form or formless, whichever object of focus the yogi finds comfortable, one should fix the mind on that and cultivate calm abiding. Fix the mind on the object, and while fixing the mind on the object, one should not fall into sinking or excitement, but meditate until it becomes extremely clear. In the Holy Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: Samadhi is a place of equanimity, peaceful and subtle, difficult to see. Because all perceptions are destroyed, therefore it is called Samadhi. If one practices calm abiding, the yogi should cultivate insight. Abiding in calm abiding, one should completely seek the suchness of wisdom, thinking that one should not be satisfied with calm abiding alone. So, what is suchness like? From the ultimate point of view, whether it is a person, or the five aggregates, or the twelve sources, or the eighteen elements, or the body of the Buddha, or wisdom and below, or sentient beings up to hell, or the ocean, or Mount Meru, or objects designated as dharma, or all that is designated as names, one should carefully analyze and examine with wisdom, thinking that it is without self-nature and empty, naturally purified, empty from the beginning, beyond the realm of all thought and speech, Nirvana is not to be taken, Samsara is not to be abandoned, thinking that it is like the nature of space, and one should not let the mind wander. In the Holy Sutra of Complete Purification of Karmic Obscurations, it says: Children analyze and examine by grasping at things, the accumulation of illusion, non-existent and empty. This has no desire, hatred, or ignorance. All these dharmas are without characteristics, the root is invisible, peaceful from the beginning, the end is formless, solitary and without essence, desire is clear light, ignorance is completely peaceful. In the Holy One Hundred and Fifty Verses, it says: Everything is the nature of space, and space also has no nature. By cultivating the nature of space, all supreme equality is perfected.
