If acting at one time, there are no three times. If qualities are gradual, it becomes a fault. If acting gradually, it is only the destruction of permanence. This is an intermediate verse. Thus, having refuted the outsiders, in order to show the distinctions of one's own school, there are the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika schools. Or there are eighteen schools, each holding its own tenets. The Vaibhashikas consider that which is destroyed by destruction and that which is destroyed by wisdom to be conventional truth, and that which cannot be destroyed by both to be ultimate truth. The Sarvastivadins assert that the five aggregates exist as substances, namely, form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, as well as non-associated formations and unconditioned phenomena. Form is considered to be a substance composed of aggregated atoms. Atoms are also formed by the aggregation of circles with intervals, and so on. The form accumulated from this, such as the form of the sense-sphere of the mind, non-cognitive form, etc., is considered to be a substance. Mind is the difference of the six consciousnesses. Mental factors are also different. Mind and mental factors do not have the aspect of pleasure and objects, but directly grasp objects. Non-associated formations are considered to be substances separate from form, mind, and mental factors. Unconditioned phenomena, namely space, and the three, cessation by discrimination and non-discrimination, are considered to be substances of permanence. Other than that, the desired self of a person, in conventional truth, the apprehended and the apprehender are ultimate truth. Among them, the four forms of the apprehended are conventional, and atoms are considered ultimate, and they are considered to be non-adhesive and non-touching. The form of the dharma-sphere, non-cognitive form, etc., is considered to be imputed, not established as form. Mind is the six consciousnesses. Mental factors are separate substances. Mind and mental factors have the aspect of objects, but it is not considered that they directly grasp objects. Names such as attainment are not established as substances, but are established only as designations. Unconditioned phenomena are not established as substances, but are considered only as negations of non-existence. The above is the view of the Sautrantikas. Or it is said that they are divided into eighteen schools, of which the four root schools are: the Mahasanghika, the Sarvastivada, the Sthavira, and the Vatsiputriya. The Mahasanghika has five schools: the Eastern Mountain School and...

The Western Mountain Division, the Snow Mountain Division, the Worldly Speech Division, and the Constant Speech Division are so called. The Sarvāstivāda has six: the Kāśyapīya, the Bahuśrutīya, the Dharmagupta, the Mahāsāṃghika, the Kāśāyavastra, and the Vibhajyavāda. The Sthavira has three: the Jetavanavāsin, the Abhayagirivāsin, and the Mahāvihāravāsin. The Mahīśāsaka is divided into three: the Mahīśāsaka, the Dharmarakṣita, and the Vātsīputrīya. It cannot be established because what is grasped has no object, and the grasper has no self-nature. It is only what one imagines. Because it cannot become a real meaning, the object of what is grasped is also not different from consciousness. If it is different, it should not appear, because there is no connection. For example, the ear does not see form. It also cannot be the cause of the object, because the past and the fruit have ceased, and the future has no cause. The present simultaneous one has no benefit, so it cannot be a cause. Furthermore, one and many also contradict each other, because self-appearance and arising contradict each other. Consciousness should also not exist, because there is no object. For example, if there is no sound, ear consciousness does not arise. Therefore, like the self imagined by the heretics, although it does not exist, it is only a mental construct. This is the intermediate meaning. In order to show the view that phenomena such as true and false appearances exist. True appearances are diverse and non-dual, true in the nature of one consciousness. The meaning is this: the diverse appearances that gather in one cause and appear as one are established as the nature of one consciousness in the ultimate sense, and are considered to be the nature of consciousness. That is not reasonable, because one and many contradict each other, etc. If consciousness is one and does not exist, then many appearances also become one. If many appearances and one are the same, then consciousness also becomes the same. If many are not truly established, then consciousness also becomes many. If you say that the reason is not established, it is not so. If many do not exist but appear, then they will become objects, and they will also become seeing the truth. If you admit that they appear as delusion, then the truth of the appearances is lost.
