, it is appropriate to familiarize oneself with it. Even a slight arising of faith and understanding is a cause for purifying defilements and so forth, what need is there to mention familiarization? As it is said: The Blessed One said: If the merit of bodhicitta had a form, it would fill all of space, and would still be more. The amount of the accumulation of merit of all sentient beings, the bodhicitta of a bodhisattva, surpasses all of them. The accumulation of merit of a bodhisattva, the amount of all that arises, the merit of upholding vows, surpasses all of them. Although the Buddhas exert themselves and teach for countless eons, the merit of upholding the true Dharma will never reach its limit. The merit of bodhicitta and the supreme Dharma, as well as the merit of truly gathering, even one-sixteenth of those who give rise to faith and understanding in emptiness cannot match it. Here, give rise to faith and understanding in emptiness, and do not abandon bodhicitta, constantly uphold the supreme Dharma, this is the concise meaning of merit. Thus it is said. Therefore, those who familiarize themselves with this will effortlessly attain higher realms and definite goodness. Whatever result arises from cultivating merit in a non-objective way, it does not arise in an objective way. Valid cognition can only remove obstacles, but removing the obscurations to knowledge in real things is completely inverted. Therefore, all the practices of externalists that are entered into by that power, like entering into the inversion of self and what belongs to self, are of little power. Entering without objectifying things has great results, because it arises from a vast cause, like the sprouts of strong seeds and so on. Thus it is said. Obtaining excellent definite goodness is impossible for sentient beings who are attached to inversion. Those who see the absence of self of persons can only remove a small portion of the obscurations of affliction, but cannot remove the obscurations to knowledge. Even those who see a little of the absence of self of phenomena, because they have not completely abandoned inversion in objects other than those, all of them have it.

It is not so. Therefore, for those who wish for eminence and definitive good, there is nothing else to become accustomed to other than that. Therefore, only that, only this should be accustomed to. Some say this: If merit and non-merit and their fruits are also completely false, then why do Madhyamikas exhaust themselves by taking and abandoning the accumulation of merit and non-merit? Those who say that it is beautiful to act only according to one's own wishes are speaking unreasonably. Like this, is this said for the sake of a person who has not abandoned the habit of clinging to things, and who, through inference born from the distinction of lineage, has faith in the definitive emptiness? Or is it said to those who have abandoned the habit of clinging to things? If it is said for the sake of the former, then it is not a correct statement. Because those who have not abandoned the habit of clinging to things also use terms in common with beings who are different from them, through reason and scripture. For them and those who are different from them, there is no difference in terms. Therefore, these people should not engage in accumulating merit, nor should they engage in and avoid the accumulation of sin. If it is said that it is unreasonable for discriminators to share the world and terms with non-discriminators, then they should not engage in anything, nor should they avoid anything. Therefore, they should not engage in eating, drinking, embracing suffering, and so on, nor should they avoid snakes, poison, thorns, and so on. Furthermore, merit and non-merit and their fruits are not completely false, but all dharmas are so. If some of them are false, then the accumulation of false happiness and suffering, and the accumulation of merit and non-merit that are objects of abandonment, should also be the same. If not, then there is nothing. Therefore, as long as the terms of taking and abandoning are still in use, one should follow the realms of good and bad deeds. Those who pretend to be Madhyamikas
