because it is inverted. Because of mastering the form that contradicts all inversions, that is, all dharmas are without self-nature, therefore, by abandoning the inversions of things and so on, the root is cut off, and thus all obscurations can be abandoned. As it is also said in the Arya Two Truths Sutra: 'Manjushri, how can one fully understand afflictions?' Manjushri said: 'In terms of ultimate truth, for things that are extremely unborn and unarisen, in conventional truth, there is inversion from non-existence, and from that inversion, conceptualization and discrimination arise. From conceptualization and discrimination, improper attention arises. From improper attention, self-grasping arises. From self-grasping, all views arise. From all views, afflictions arise. Son of the gods, those who see all dharmas as extremely unborn and unarisen things in ultimate truth are not inverted in ultimate truth. Whoever is not inverted in ultimate truth does not conceptualize or discriminate. Whoever does not conceptualize or discriminate proceeds properly. Whoever proceeds properly will not grasp at self. Whoever does not grasp at self will not give rise to views, and will not even give rise to the view of seeing nirvana as happiness in ultimate truth. The afflictions of suchness abiding in the unborn nature are seen as extremely subdued, and this is called subduing afflictions. Son of the gods, when one knows that afflictions and appearances do not exist, and knows that ultimate truth is extremely empty, without characteristics, and extremely without substance, then, son of the gods, one has fully understood afflictions. Son of the gods, for example, one who extracts the species of a snake can pacify the poison of that snake. Son of the gods, similarly, whoever extracts the species of afflictions, their afflictions will be completely pacified.' The son of the gods said: 'Manjushri, what is the species of afflictions?' Manjushri said: Son of the gods,'

Furthermore, whatever pervasive conceptualization arises regarding the entities of all phenomena, those that are utterly unborn and unarisen, is said to be a category of afflictions. Because of the perversion of things and so forth, it also pervades all perversions. Therefore, if one abandons the perversion of things and so forth, one abandons all perversions, and by this, one will also properly abandon the obscuration of knowledge, because obscuration is the characteristic of perversion. When the obscuration of knowledge is abandoned, since there is no obstruction, like the sun's rays in the sky free from clouds and other obscurations, the appearance of unobstructed knowledge of all things will arise. Thus, consciousness is the nature of the clarity of the self-nature of things, and it is also near. If there is an obstruction, then things will not appear clearly. If there is no obstruction, why would all things not appear as they are, since one has attained an inconceivable difference in understanding? Therefore, since one fully knows the nature of all things as they are in conventional and ultimate reality, one attains omniscience. Therefore, this path alone is supreme for abandoning obscurations. Therefore, those who wish to attain the state of omniscience should rely on this unique path of emptiness with wisdom endowed with skillful means. It is not just by one alone. If one relies solely on wisdom without skillful means, like the Hearers, one will fall into nirvana because one has directly realized cessation. By relying only on skillful means, one will also become perverted and fall into samsara. Therefore, the path of the Bodhisattvas, because of the power of wisdom, does not abide in samsara, and because of the power of skillful means, does not enter into nirvana. The nature of skillful means and wisdom is non-abiding nirvana, which is the cause for attaining nirvana. As it is said in the Noble Gaya Head Mountain Sutra: Which paths, when possessed, will Bodhisattvas quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? These are the two paths of Bodhisattvas briefly shown: What are the two? They are wisdom and skillful means, as it is said. In the Noble Vimalakirti Sutra

Moreover, it is stated in the 'Exposition Scripture': 'Wisdom without means is a bond for Bodhisattvas. Means without wisdom is also a bond. Means with wisdom is liberation. Wisdom with means is also liberation.' Therefore, the mind of enlightenment should be generated with great compassion for all sentient beings as the foremost guide. In order to attain the state of omniscience, one should cultivate wisdom and means, that is, become accustomed to all the characteristics of the accumulation of merit, such as generosity. In this way, the Bodhisattva abandons the extremes of superimposition and denigration and enters the Middle Way. Because wisdom fully knows the nature of all things as they are, one does not fall into the extreme of superimposition. By demonstrating skillful means, one does not denigrate all merits such as generosity in the conventional realm, so one does not fall into the extreme of denigration. Just as one who is exhausted by the heat relies solely on emptiness to remove the inverted iron hook, but does not directly realize emptiness. As it is said in the 'Ten Dharmas Sutra': 'For example, a person respects fire, reveres fire, regards it as a teacher, pleases it, makes offerings to it, and honors it well, but he does not think, "I have respected fire, regarded it as a teacher, pleased it, made offerings to it, and honored it well, so I should grasp it with both hands." Why is that? Because he thinks, "From that, suffering of my body and displeasure of my mind will come." Similarly, a Bodhisattva also thinks of Nirvana, inclines towards Nirvana, enters Nirvana, and abides in Nirvana, but does not directly realize Nirvana. Why is that? Because he thinks, "From that, I may turn away from enlightenment." The details of means and wisdom must be ascertained from the 'Inexhaustible Wisdom Sutra' and other scriptures. In short, what are the means of a Bodhisattva? It is to realize with wisdom that all phenomena are without inherent existence, like illusions, etc., inverted
