Moreover, if one does not understand the words, there is no other way to understand. For those who have understanding and strive to seek meaning, but do not understand the necessity of practice, because they do not accept the respective certain practices, therefore, in order to guide the faculties of the listeners, first, in order to explain what is to be expressed in this treatise and the necessity, it is said "like images, etc." What is to be expressed here is that all dharmas are without inherent existence. Understanding this is the real necessity. And its ultimate necessity is to abandon all afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations. After that, because hope is completely cut off, there is no other necessity. The relationship is to explain that this treatise and the necessity, etc., are the characteristics of what is to be proven and the entity that proves it. Because it is not a branch for guiding others to strive to seek meaning. Moreover, only with a relationship can it be explained, because its nature is the essence that cannot be explained. Therefore, the relationship should not be explained separately. "Like images, etc.," etc., is to explain that understanding all dharmas as being without inherent existence is the only method to abandon afflictive obscurations, etc. For example, all afflictions such as desire are only caused by perversion. And perversion is also the aspect of clinging to what is without inherent existence in a wrong way, therefore its characteristic is clinging to what is real, etc. Only by understanding the absence of inherent existence, which is the opposite of perversion, can perversion be abandoned. If perversion is abandoned, then how can the collection of afflictions rooted in perversion and all cognitive obscurations exist with the nature of perversion? It is said: "The wise, regarding the selflessness of phenomena, after familiarizing themselves with the absence of inherent existence, can eliminate all afflictions and obscurations arising from perversion." This will be explained by this, clinging to what is real, etc., is itself perversion, which will be explained in detail later. The word "aspect" means collection. Examination is the meaning of separately distinguishing the true reality of what is real. For those who do not have the knowledge of shepherds, etc., that is without examination.

Oh! Therefore, it is joy because of joy. For those things that exist alone without being examined, only joy exists. This is how the words are combined. This shows that for worldly knowledge, the things that appear are not eliminated. Then, if someone thinks, how is it that things are without inherent existence? Here, "truly" is mentioned, because the word "truly" refers to the essence of the nature of things, which is to be understood by inference arising from the power of things themselves. If analyzed in the manner of the nature of things, it is emptiness, that is its meaning. This explains "the nature of things" and "ultimate truth" and so on. Or, only true knowledge can be called true and so on, because its object is truth. Through the thought of true knowledge, things are without inherent existence, but through the thought of worldly knowledge, things are not without inherent existence, that is its meaning. If someone thinks, who is the one to be abandoned? Here, "the perfection of one's own and others' benefit" and so on are mentioned, because in order to accomplish the perfection of one's own and others' benefit, those who, regardless of anything, begin to accumulate merit and wisdom through generosity and so on, are called that. The Hearers and so on, because their foundation is unstable, and because their compassion and diligence are weak, think that even by becoming accustomed to abandoning all obscurations of knowledge in countless eons, they will not be able to truly accomplish what should be accomplished. All that the Bodhisattvas do, although it is solely for the sake of accomplishing the perfection of others' benefit, it is not the case that there is no intention to accomplish the perfection of their own benefit, therefore both benefits are mentioned, and it says "strive diligently," which shows the excellence of striving diligently, and completely abandons this repetition. Therefore, as it is said, although the past teachers have already explained that all phenomena are without inherent existence, in order to eliminate all bad slanders, they explain with excellent effort, that is what is said. Therefore, striving diligently is not meaningless. Precisely because of this, by eliminating bad slanders, this is called the Ornament of the Middle Way. First, solely through reasoning.
