It also enables understanding. Although there are many, the word "one" is justified for the purpose of distinguishing those. If there is nothing else, then what does this "one" distinguish? Thus, it would be an untenable fault. There is no number of "one" other than the nature of the name. For example, "the enemy has not been liberated from there," and so on, the words spoken in other places, like this, are related to many, and for the reason of many, it is not the case that one exists apart from the many. Because it depends on others, it is not self-generated. Because it is not self-generated, it is not established. Similarly, the other numbers should also be understood. If numbers are not valid in that way, then how are the names "one," "two," and "many," etc., applied? Therefore, it is dependent arising. Things have no characteristics. It will be said thus: because it is mutually dependent, therefore, "one" or "many" do not abide in their own characteristics; therefore, in all aspects of dependent arising, things are without characteristics. Just as the characteristics of the qualities of weaving, although not established in the weaving itself, yet by relying on it, cloth is woven. Similarly, even though there is no "one" in the ultimate sense, the name "many" is applied by relying on it. Even if "many" is not established, the name "one" is applied by relying on it. In the ultimate sense, because there are no characteristics, it is said that things have no characteristics. Because it is without characteristics, there are no characteristics. Because it is made into a characteristic by the mind that names it as a thing, it is called a characteristic. That is also because it is completely unestablished, so it is said to be without characteristics. Here it is said: If you thus negate numbers, thereby proving no cause, if it were indeed so, then you would not attain dependent arising. How so? Like this, here, relying on a cause, a result arises; this is dependent arising. If no cause is established, it will be harmed. Harming it is also unreasonable, because the Blessed One said that seeing it is seeing the Dharma. Because seeing dependent arising is seeing the Dharma, and whoever sees the Dharma sees the Tathagata, so it is said in the sutra.

Therefore, if it is said that because there is dependent arising, there is a cause for production, the answer is: It is permissible to investigate arising in dependence on a cause, but not for that which has no cause. Likewise, it is also unreasonable to investigate dependent arising, because of myself. Which are the twelve limbs of dependent arising? That which is the fruit of suffering is not produced. It is not in one mind, nor is it in many. Among them, due to ignorance, there are actions, etc., up to old age and death, which are called the twelve limbs of dependent arising. Moreover, the result of this dependent arising is suffering, and suffering is the result of this, therefore it is the fruit of suffering. Because it is established that "whatever is impermanent is suffering." Are these twelve limbs permanent? Because of impermanence, it is of the nature of harm. Because it is of the nature of harm, it is suffering. Therefore, it is said in the sutra: "Thus, this is merely the arising of a great mass of suffering." Whatever is made is impermanent; whatever is impermanent is not produced by its own nature; whatever is not produced by its own nature is unborn. It is said in the sutra: "That which is the fruit of suffering is not produced." The meaning is that because it is the fruit of suffering, it is not produced. Who is not born? It is said in the sutra: "Which are the twelve limbs of dependent arising?" Among them, because the limb of cause is also suffering, it is not born, it is completely grasped, therefore it is reasonable to abide separately in emptiness. For what reason, these which are said to be the twelve limbs of dependent arising, which are the fruit of suffering, are also not born. Why? Because if we examine them separately, they are not in one mind, nor are they in many. Among them, ignorance and action, because they are included in the past existence; and the limbs of consciousness, name, form, six senses, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, and existence, because they are included in the present existence; and the limbs of birth and old age and death, because they are included in the future existence, therefore they are not born in one mind, nor in many.
