Just as a sprout emerges from the soil, eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and form, so its state of ignorance is like the eye. From its complete transformation, the transformation of consciousness will occur. By bestowing benefits and causing harm, it is gradually proven to be clear and unclear. Therefore, the eye faculty becomes the basis for this, so it is called eye consciousness, which is what it indicates. This eye faculty, within the eye's basis—the eyeball—is about the size of a grape, like a sesame flower, covered by skin and flesh and located in the middle, and is understood from its own result—consciousness. That is to say, like those blind people, the basis of the eye exists similarly, but consciousness does not arise, so it is fully known that there is no faculty. The consciousness that relies on the eye also arises only when conditions such as the eye, form, light, and attention are fully present. Just like the sound of a large drum and barley sprouts, it relies on uncommon causes, so it is called the consciousness of that basis. This also agrees with the statements in the Vibhajyavāda. What is the eye faculty? It is the basis of eye consciousness, the first form, so it is said. This eye consciousness has two bases: the co-emergent eye and the past mind. If the eye is said to be the basis of eye consciousness, then the mind will also receive unfavorable treatment, so it is said to be form and light. Similarly, one should also understand for the ear and so on. The difference is that the subtle particles of the ear faculty exist like a knot of wheat. The subtle particles of the nose faculty are like the inside of a barley grain, behind the nostrils, like eye medicine sticks lined up. The first three faculties exist like a rosary. The subtle particles of the tongue faculty exist like a half-moon. The subtle particles of the body faculty exist like the body. The special feature of the body faculty is the courageous faculty. Among them, the subtle particles of the female faculty exist like the cavity of an unshaken large drum. The subtle particles of the male faculty are like the thumb...

Thus it abides. These five, such as the eye, are called faculties because they are the masters of their respective objects as near objectives. Thus, the eye is particularly dominant over form as a near objective, but it is not form itself. Similarly, it should also be understood for the ear and so on. Because it dominates femaleness and maleness, it is the faculty of female and male. Among them, the nature of female is the self-nature, speech, action, and thought of female. The nature of male is the self-nature, speech, action, and thought of male. Because it dominates them, it is the faculty of female and male. Thus, the faculties have been shown. Now the objects will be explained. Among them, what is cognized by eye consciousness is the self-characteristic of the nature of the form source. Similarly, what is cognized by the consciousness of each of the senses, such as sound, is the self-characteristic of the sound and other sources. When divided by their respective differences, the form source becomes two types: color and shape. Among them, there are four colors: blue and so on. The others are its distinctions. There are eight shapes: long and so on up to unequal. That same form source can also be expressed as twenty types, namely blue, yellow, red, white, long, short, round, square, high, low, even, uneven, cloud, smoke, dust, mist, shadow, sun, light, and darkness. Among them, even is the absence of uneven. Uneven is what dwells in high and low. Mist is a bulge. Sun is sunlight. Light is the light of the moon, stars, fire, medicine, and jewels. Shadow is where forms appear. The opposite is darkness. The rest are easy to understand. The form source has been explained. Sound has eight types: those arising from the great elements with and without grasping, showing sentient and non-sentient beings separately, thus there are four types. Again, each of these is divided into eight types by the distinction of pleasant and unpleasant.

Therefore, because it holds the basis for the arising of mind and mental factors, it is holding. That is the meaning of being "associated with mind," not being different from the senses. Whatever has the great elements of holding as a cause is the cause of the great elements of holding, such as the sound of hands and speech. Others are the cause of the great elements of non-holding, such as the sound of wind, forests, and rivers. The sound that indicates sentient beings is the sound that determines sentient beings, that is, by what sound is it determined to be a sentient being, that is, a living being, that is what indicates sentient beings. The opposite is what indicates non-sentient beings. Among them, the sound that indicates sentient beings due to the cause of the great elements of holding is the sound of speech. What does not indicate sentient beings is other than that. The sound that indicates sentient beings due to the cause of the great elements of non-holding is the sound of the emanation's drum. What does not indicate sentient beings is the sound of wind, forests, and rivers. Pleasant is what makes one happy. Unpleasant is the opposite of that. Others say that there are also sounds that are the cause of the great elements of holding and non-holding. For example, like the sound produced by the combination of hands and drums. That is not possible, just as it is not desired that one color atom produces four great elements with two characteristics, so this is also not desired. Smell has four aspects: fragrant, non-fragrant, equal, and unequal. In the scriptures, there are three types: fragrant, non-fragrant, and equal. Taste has six types: sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and astringent. From the correct combination of these fundamental tastes, infinite taste differences will arise. Tangible objects are of eleven natures, namely the four great elements, as well as smoothness, roughness, heaviness, lightness, coldness, hunger, and thirst. Among them, the great elements have already been explained. Smoothness is what feels comfortable to the touch. Roughness is what one does not want to touch. Heaviness is what is used to measure things.
