How do the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, arise from Bodhisattvas? This is true, but with two causes, Bodhisattvas become the cause of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, namely, due to the difference in stages and causing correct adherence. Among them, due to the difference in stages, the stage of the Tathagata is the cause of the stage of the Bodhisattva. Due to causing correct adherence, it is thought that just as the noble Manjushri became a Bodhisattva, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, Shakyamuni, and other Tathagatas, only in the very beginning, caused the correct adherence to the thought of Bodhicitta. Therefore, in this way, considering the main cause of that ultimate result, it is taught that the Tathagatas arise from Bodhisattvas. Therefore, since the cause is complete and extremely firm, praising the cause also implies praising the result. It is said that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, should be carefully and well protected like a great medicinal tree that gives definite and immeasurable fruits, like the stage of sprouts being tall and leaves being soft. It should be shown that, for the sake of the sentient beings who are close to that time and are placed in the three vehicles, it is necessary to definitely combine with the Mahayana, and therefore, praise is made to the Bodhisattvas. As it is said in the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra: "Light Protector, just as one worships the crescent moon but not the dark moon. Light Protector, similarly, those who have great faith in me should worship the Bodhisattvas, but not the Tathagatas. Why? Because the Tathagatas arise from the Bodhisattvas. From the Tathagatas arise all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas." Thus it is said. Therefore, in this way, it is established by reason and scriptures that the Tathagatas arise from the Bodhisattvas. Furthermore, why are those Bodhisattvas causal?

If asked what the reason is? (The answer is) the mind of compassion and non-dual wisdom, the mind of Bodhi is the root of all the sons of the Victorious Ones. Thus it is said. Among them, compassion is love, possessing the aspects and its own nature that will be explained here. Non-dual wisdom is the wisdom that is free from the two extremes of things and non-things, and so on. The mind of Bodhi is from the Sutra of the Holy Dharma Going Everywhere: Bodhisattvas comprehend all dharmas through the mind of Bodhi. All dharmas are equal to the realm of dharma. All dharmas that arise suddenly and do not abide are merely to be understood, and because the knower is empty, they are merely to be fully understood. Therefore, thinking that sentient beings should comprehend such a nature of dharma, whatever mind arises in the Bodhisattva, this is called the Bodhisattva's mind of Bodhi. The mind that benefits and brings happiness to all sentient beings, the supreme mind, the mind that is subdued by loving-kindness, the mind that is irresistible by compassion, the mind that has no regret with joy, the mind that has no defilement with equanimity, the mind that is immutable by emptiness, the mind that has no obscuration with signlessness, the mind that is non-abiding with wishlessness, as it has been taught. The main causes of the Bodhisattvas are compassion, non-dual wisdom, and the mind of Bodhi, these three dharmas. As it is said in the Ratnavali: Its root is the mind of Bodhi, as stable as the king of mountains, compassion that pervades all directions, and wisdom that does not rely on duality. Thus it is said. Since the root of both the mind of Bodhi and non-dual wisdom is also compassion, therefore, wanting to show that compassion is the main thing, because loving-kindness is the excellent harvest of the Victorious Ones, like seeds, nourishment, and water for a long time, I regard it as enjoyment, abiding, and ripening, therefore I first praise compassion. Just as external grains and so on are complete, seeds are at the beginning, middle, and end

Just as water and ripeness are indispensable as the main factors, so compassion also shows itself to be indispensable for the perfect harvest of Buddhahood in all three times. Thus, a compassionate person, being distressed by the suffering of others, in order to completely protect all sentient beings who are suffering, will undoubtedly generate this resolve: 'I must liberate all beings in this world from suffering, and I must certainly place them in the state of Buddhahood.' This vow cannot be accomplished by abandoning non-dual wisdom, so it is certain to enter into non-dual wisdom. Therefore, compassion itself is the seed of all the Buddha's teachings. As it is said in the Precious Garland: 'Which Mahayana sutra, first speaks of compassion, and all practices, and proclaims immaculate wisdom, who with a mind would revile it?' Thus it is said. Even if the mind of enlightenment has been generated, if later it is not repeatedly watered with the water of compassion, then this mind of enlightenment, not having accumulated a vast collection of fruits, will certainly be surpassed by the Nirvana of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas and enter into extinction. Even if the state of limitless fruit has been attained, if later it is separated from the complete maturation of compassion, then this state will not be enjoyed for a long time, and the great collection of noble fruits, passing from one stage to another, will not manifest and increase for a long time. Now, in order to enter into the distinction of the object of focus, and also to clearly reveal the characteristics of the nature of compassion itself, wanting to begin to pay homage to it, therefore it is said: 'First clinging to self as I, then generating attachment to what is mine, like a waterwheel without autonomy, to those who are compassionate to beings, I bow down.' Thus it is said. This world, before manifesting attachment to self, first clings to the non-existent self as existing through self-grasping, and clings to this as true. And, to all phenomena other than the object of self-grasping
