Through the power of the samadhi of earth, one remembers past abodes. They say, "Because I arose from non-existence before, therefore I arose from nothing, I was born from no cause." Some who become sophists, through a sequence involving sophistry, say with their own vision and their own pride that the self and the world arose from no cause. Thus, there are eighteen speculations about the prior extreme. The sixteen who speak of perception, relying on the posterior extreme, say that the self and the world are possessed of form and perception; they say that the self is formless and possessed of perception; the self and perception are both possessed of form and formless; the self and perception are neither possessed of form nor formless; this alone is true, the rest is delusion; they say that the self possessed of perception has limits; they say that the self possessed of perception has no limits; they say that the self possessed of perception is neither with limits nor without limits; they say that the self possessed of perception is both with limits and without limits, this alone is true, the rest is false; similarly, they say that the self possessed of perception is solely happy; solely suffering; both happy and suffering; neither happy nor suffering, this alone is true, the rest is ignorance; they say that the self possessed of perception is one; they say that the self possessed of perception is many; they say that the self possessed of perception is limitless; they say that the self possessed of perception is immeasurable, these alone are true, the rest is ignorance. The eight who speak of non-perception say that the self and the world are non-perceptual and possessed of form; similarly, they say that it is formless; both possessed of form and formless; the self without perception is neither possessed of form nor formless; I say it has limits; I say it has no limits; has limits

and is also without limits. My lack of perception is neither with limits nor without limits. This alone is true, and the rest is ignorance. The eight who speak of neither perception nor non-perception are: I, who have form, am neither without perception nor without non-perception. Similarly, without form, and both with and without form, and neither with nor without form, and both with and without limits. I, without perception and without non-perception, am neither with limits nor without limits. These alone are true, and the rest is ignorance. The five who speak of attaining nirvana in the visible dharma are: Here, some ascetics or brahmins say this: When I equally obtain, equally enjoy, and equally possess the five qualities of desire, and fully enjoy them, then I have attained nirvana in the visible dharma. Others say this: This is also attaining nirvana in the visible dharma, but there is something more excellent than this. What is it? It is that I, having become secluded from desires, secluded from evil and unwholesome dharmas, with deliberation and examination, born of seclusion, with joy and bliss, having attained and abide in the first dhyana. Such a one temporarily attains nirvana in the visible dharma. Similarly, having attained and abide in the second dhyana, the third dhyana, and the fourth dhyana, such a one temporarily attains nirvana in the visible dharma. The seven who speak of annihilation are: Here, some say that I am a form composed of the four great elements, born of father and mother, which will be cut off and destroyed, and not only that, but I will be completely annihilated. Others say that when I become a deity body enjoying desires, nourished by morsel food, and will be destroyed, I will be completely annihilated. Still others say that the nature of mind

Some heretics say that when the body, limbs, and all parts of a god are completely perfect, the senses are without defect, and completely perish, then my consciousness is completely annihilated. Others say that when my consciousness attains the formless realm, obtains the birth place of infinite space, obtains the birth place of infinite consciousness, obtains the birth place of nothingness, and completely perishes, then my consciousness is completely annihilated. Still others say that this is not complete annihilation, then what is it? When my consciousness attains the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, and completely perishes, then my consciousness is completely annihilated. These are the sixty-two nets of wrong views. The Tathagata knows that these are not true, therefore he is liberated from these wrong views. The world is confused because of clinging to these views. Those who are extremely confused, liberated from the two extreme views of existence and non-existence, like the sky without obscuration, become excellent vessels of true reality, wanting to guide sentient beings, therefore, in order to purify the views of the world, in order to bring benefit and happiness to the next world, in order to benefit both worlds, for this purpose, for those worlds that have fallen into wrong views, the Tathagata, in an uncommon way, completely knows that the true conventional reality of the world is dependent origination, which is without inherent existence, although he has far surpassed the three realms, he still manifests. Because of the meaning of destruction, therefore I prostrate to those who know in this way. Thus, the treatise that is proclaimed is completely revealed through the way of proclaiming the name. Thus, this is the Madhyamaka, the essence of the concise summary. For those with wisdom, this is the viewing mirror of the images of many sutras. Thus, it refers to the order just mentioned. Because it completely abandons the two extremes, it is similar to the middle way, therefore it is Madhyamaka, the middle way itself.
