It is because of realizing that one's own mind is merely an appearance. The term "not liberated" refers to liberation from the continuum of existence (samsara). "The mind is not extinguished, nor is it not," means: What is it then? The extinction of mind is indeed existent, because one realizes that the intrinsic nature of things is not established at all, and because one does not fixate on the alaya-vijnana (store consciousness). Therefore, our saying that the mind is not substantially existent but is of the nature of aggregation is merely conventional truth, and in ultimate truth, it is no different from saying that there is a self. Conversely, those of you who assert mind-only will encounter those faults. You say: Relying on an object, Non-object arises. Relying on non-object, Non-object arises. Regarding what you have said, we do not want to take the practice of non-object as something else. How is it? Forms and so forth are empty, Because they are not self-born, Because they are not substantial, because they are destructible, Like illusion, practice without attachment. That is to say, forms and so forth, external objects that appear as causes and conditions, are actually empty, because they do not exist in the collection of different causes and conditions, so they are not self-born, and because they are of the nature of aggregation, they are not substantial, and because they cannot last long, they are destructible. For example, like an illusion, by practicing without an object, attachment will not arise. But it is not that external objects do not exist in any way. Furthermore, Although forms and so forth exist, If one truly realizes them as they are, When they are existent and non-existent, Why does perverse clinging not revert? This means that, for example, previously, from an illusion, one assumed that there was the nature of a man, but later one realizes that it is an illusion, and there is no nature in it. At that time, the thought of the man will disappear, just like a rabbit's horn, which is completely non-existent before and after, it is unreasonable for it to change like that. Similarly, although forms and so forth exist, with conventional knowledge, one assumes that these forms and so forth have intrinsic nature.

Pāla, if later one realizes the absence of true self-nature as it is, and thus knows that it is not of self-nature, then at that time, why wouldn't wrong clinging cease? Because it will definitely cease. Therefore, what meaning can you accomplish by merely initially postulating that form and other external objects do not exist for those ordinary beings who have not yet generated wisdom? Similarly, Dualistic discriminations, Mind and mental events' objects, If form and others are rejected, It is unreasonable for them not to arise. This refers to, if you believe that all dualistic discriminations are the objects of your mind and mental events, and are not related to external objects such as form, then, for this, even if you reject external objects such as form in every way, it is unreasonable for those dualistic discriminations not to arise. Then, how should it be? It is reasonable that they will definitely arise, because whether before or after, they do not depend on external objects such as form, and there is no difference. If someone says this: We only establish external objects as the nature part of consciousness with other names, just to abandon these two discriminations that are unrelated to external objects such as form, and then, when non-discriminating wisdom arises, by eliminating the part that appears as self and other, the clinging to that object will cease. To this, it is said here: If to negate that, You wish to take another establishment, Better than washing mud, To stretch without touching is better. This refers to, if you truly believe from the bottom of your heart that external objects do not exist, then what is the use of postulating that it is the nature part of consciousness? If you postulate that it is the nature part of consciousness, and then want to take another establishment to negate it later, that it is the nature part of consciousness, then, Better than washing mud, To stretch without touching is better. This metaphor becomes meaningful, just like some non-crazy fools, on a clean road
