Ah! The actions of harmful beings, and having obtained the conditions of place and body, in the present Dharma, or in other kinds, or at the time of certain suffering after birth, whatever it may be, can manifest its fruit. When good is also damaged by wrong views and harmful thoughts, or evil is also damaged by the power of antidotes such as curses, vows, and repentance, although those conditions have gathered, how can any fruit arise from the weakening of the power of the seeds of good and evil? Since the gathering of conditions is absent and the time has changed, how is it not completely eradicated? As it is said: Those who uphold the holy Dharma, their sins that are certain to be suffered, will also be suffered in the present Dharma. And it is also said: Whatever actions lead to evil destinies, here they only become a fever in the head. If there is a result of a fever in the head, how is it that the root is eradicated? The fruits of sinful actions are not completely exhausted by suffering the pain of hell, and among them, those who have not suffered even the slightest pain of hell, is that not completely eradicated? Headaches and the like occur here, how can there also be no result? If sins are completely exhausted, why is it shown that only the ripening of previous karma is excluded? It is said with reference to the continuum of blindness, one eye, lameness, crippledness, dumbness, deafness, etc., which are the nature of things, experiencing the results. Why? Because the fruits of the actions that are the nature of the state of ripening cannot be completely exhausted. What is manifested and accumulated by the mind that is the cause can be completely exhausted when other differences of mind are obtained, just like those who rely on Angulimala, King Ajatasatru, Saka, the butcher, Ashoka, and so on. If other good minds arise in King Ajatasatru and those who kill their mothers, etc.,

So, why is it that one is born in the Avīci hell even though karma has not been exhausted? It is to generate faith in karma and its results that birth in Avīci and so on is shown. It is not that all karmas are not exhausted without remainder; just as one bounces back from striking a silk bag, one is born there and liberated. Nor is one touched by the rows of hellfire and so on; in that way it is also accomplished that sins are completely eradicated, and it is not that karma has no result. Those with great vehicle awareness think this: if an antidote is obtained, then karmas are completely eradicated; what is not suppressed by an antidote will not perish. Just as for one who does not have skillful means, even a small sin is seen to ripen, like the great Maudgalyāyana's son and so on. Even if a great root of virtue has been accumulated, it is made like ashes by the fault of the mind, like a monk who reviles the teaching that overwhelms all the Tathāgatas. He had previously made offerings to the great Arhats, but later was overwhelmed by unbearable desire, stole the Saṅgha's property, and scolded them with angry words full of hatred. From that, he was born as a worm that eats filth, in a place very difficult to escape, and not even a little bit of the root of virtue remained. In the Jātaka, it is also said that Bodhisattvas and others who have the power of skillful means can completely exhaust even a great mass of non-virtue, and the small root of virtue that is obtained will not perish. In the Sūtra, it is also said: Monks, it is like this: if a person puts one srang of salt into a small amount of water, it becomes undrinkable. Then if another person puts one srang of salt into a very large amount of water, even if it is not known, how could it become undrinkable? Why is that? Monks, because there is so much water. Monks, in the same way, if someone commits sinful deeds, that person will receive two

This is the place to abide. Likewise, if one ounce of salt is poured into a large pond, how could one not want to drink that water? If one ounce of salt is poured into a handful of water, one would not want to drink that handful of water. Similarly, whoever accumulates great merit, that person's poison of sin is small, so why can't they be led to the lower realms? That door is a small fruit. Whoever has not accumulated small merit, and repeatedly accumulates much non-virtue, undoubtedly, even if it is extremely small, will be led by afflictions. It is said, like eating a small amount of unsuitable food. If that is the case, even just generating the initial mind can exhaust all actions, then why does the Bhagavan, the fully enlightened one, have the pain of being stabbed by the Senadhaka forest, killing the beautiful woman, the slander of the arrogant one, returning like washing the bowl, teaching the Dharma with barley for three months, in between being cursed by Jāṭila, becoming ill, Devadatta throwing stones, and other ripening aspects of karma? All of these are shown to tame sentient beings with skillful means, but the Bhagavan does not even possess the slightest aspect of action. Thus, as it is said in the Sutra of Skillful Means and the Chapter on Transcendence: "Son of the lineage, these ten ripening aspects of karma shown by the Tathagata should be understood as skillful means and teachings with hidden intentions." This is not the place nor the occasion. Thus, even if a Bodhisattva possesses the root of non-virtue, merely by being shown by the tip of the sound and the measure of form, it is known that sitting under the Bodhi tree is not the place. How could the Tathagata, who possesses all virtuous qualities, who has abandoned all non-virtue, and who has even abandoned the connection of habitual tendencies, have the fault of karmic obscurations arise? However, most sentient beings do not value the ripening of karma, and do not believe in the ripening of karma.
