This is expressed in a single verse, which is the tradition of this treatise. Now, the meaning of the words is explained: In order for the teacher to demonstrate himself as having the conduct of a holy being, and to respect the guru, and also to ensure that the composition of this treatise will definitely be successful, therefore, first, it is said, "I prostrate to the glorious protector guru." The two accumulations of merit and wisdom that transcend the world are "glorious," meaning possessing. Possessing glory is the name that includes the possessor. Or, glory is excellent fortune, meaning its nature. The one who leads to the sacred place is the "protector." From the perspective of phonetics, although phonetics also has power, it can be overcome by a near transformation. As it is said, "Although the water of the Ganges is sweet, the ocean water remains as it is." Or, because the protector, the savior, and the refuge benefit, that is why it is called that. "Guru" means that because he is a treasure of precious qualities, he is called a guru. To prostrate to him is to bow down. Then it is connected to "Extracted from all the essence of wisdom, composed by the noble Deva." Here, since the distinction of the guru is not clearly specified, whose qualities should this be understood as? This should be understood as the qualities of the noble Nagarjuna, because these qualities belong to him, and he is also the guru of this teacher. If that is the case, then are not the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, these great beings, also objects of reverence for the teacher, the noble Nagarjuna? Why abandon reverence to them and show respect to this teacher? This is because he possesses qualities, is able to benefit, and respects the guru. Because he is a sacred field of merit, as stated in the Sutra of the Great Drum and the Sutra of the Great Cloud, and so on. For example, this teacher, in countless past eons, in a vast and extremely vast eon, in one eon, a fully enlightened Buddha named Rahu appeared, at that time this teacher became a universal monarch, and therefore generated the mind of enlightenment, and

At that time, when the Blessed One Dipamkara Buddha appeared, this teacher was also born as the son of a Chakravartin king, and when he planted the roots of virtue, the Tathagata said, 'Son of good family, after countless eons in the future, when the thousand Buddhas of the Good Aeon have passed into complete Nirvana, and sixty-two eons of evil destinies have passed, then a hundred thousand Pratyekabuddhas will pass into Nirvana, and after eight protectors have passed into Nirvana, in that very field, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, named Jnana Utpatti Prabha Buddha will appear.' And he prophesied. When Shakyamuni was dwelling, this teacher was born as a Licchavi youth, named 'Joy to All Who See in the World.' The Blessed One said, 'This boy, eighty years after my complete Nirvana, in the southern region, relying on the city called Murunda River, near the city called 'Impregnable by Armies,' in the place called 'Great Garland City,' born in the lineage called White Mountain, will become a Bhikshu holding my name, and for a hundred years, he will spread my teachings, practice the Extremely Joyful Ground, and after attaining the eighth ground, he will pass away and be born in the Sukhavati Pure Land, placing his ripened body there, and with his emanation body, he will listen to the Dharma from Bodhisattva Maitreya.' And he prophesied. The assembled retinue also said, 'How wonderful! Joy to All Who See in the World, steadfastly transformed into a Bhikshu's body, he will uphold the teachings for a long time, and will beat the great drum of Dharma. After he has passed into complete Nirvana, the world will become empty, and after that Dharma speaker has passed away, there will be no other like him. Such a Bhikshu is difficult to find, and the light will gradually diminish. Thus, he is the last one to appear in the South.' Thus they praised him. This is the great nature of this (teacher's) qualities. What is the capacity to benefit? This teacher is skilled in the sciences, including medicine.
