For the sake of contemplation, contemplating the profound Perfection of Wisdom, and those aggregates are also nothing other than emptiness, the self-nature of which is without object, thus contemplating. The so-called five aggregates are: the aggregate of form is like a bubble; feeling is like a blister; perception is like a mirage; formation is like a plantain tree; consciousness is like an illusion. Self-nature emptiness means that those five aggregates are empty of the nature of self-nature; because it transcends all extremes and is without characteristics, it is emptiness. Then, the venerable Shariputra, by the power of the Buddha, said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the noble Avalokiteshvara, "What is said is that Shariputra, who is the foremost in wisdom among the great Shravakas, asked the noble Avalokiteshvara by the blessing of the Tathagata. How should a son of good family who wishes to practice the profound Perfection of Wisdom train?" The so-called son of good family is born from the Mahayana scriptures and becomes the son of the Tathagata. The so-called any son of good family means anyone who enters the Mahayana. To practice the Perfection of Wisdom means to practice the profound, inexpressible reality of all dharmas by practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. How should one who wishes to practice train? It is asked, "How should one who wishes to practice the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom know and train?" Having said that, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the noble Avalokiteshvara, said to the venerable Shariputra, which means to answer the question. Shariputra, any son or daughter of good family who wishes to practice the profound Perfection of Wisdom should definitely contemplate in this way, which means that those who wish to practice the Perfection of Wisdom should contemplate the meaning explained below. Those five aggregates are also empty of self-nature.

To say 'I will observe accordingly' means that these five aggregates are by nature emptiness. Because they are without characteristics, they are not born in the past, do not abide in the present, and do not cease in the future. Since they have never been born, abided, or ceased in all times, their nature of non-abiding is inexpressible, hence they are emptiness. To observe means to observe as it truly is, and not to observe anything else. This much is entering into wisdom. Now, the meaning of the characteristic of emptiness is explained: Form is empty. Emptiness is also form. Among them, 'form' refers to seeing and perceiving as form with a deluded mind, or designating with words, because the nature of emptiness is not understood. 'Empty' means that the nature of form is emptiness, so even in the past, there is no characteristic, hence there is no object of focus. Even in the present and future, there is no characteristic. Because there is no object of focus, all extremes and all things do not abide, therefore it is called emptiness. 'Emptiness is also form' means that emptiness is also designated as the word 'form' for the nature of having no object of focus, and because it does not exist separately from it, emptiness is also form. Form is not different from emptiness, and emptiness is not different from form, which means that whatever is form is the inexpressible emptiness. If form is abandoned, emptiness cannot be found, therefore it is said that form is not different from emptiness. Whatever is the inexpressible emptiness is designated as the word 'form,' and it does not exist separately from it and cannot be found, therefore it is said that emptiness is also not different from form. Likewise, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are all empty, which means that just as it was explained for form, the remaining aggregates should also be observed in the same way. Shariputra, likewise, all phenomena are also emptiness, among which, 'Shariputra' is a reminder, meaning do not be distracted, listen well. Likewise, all phenomena are emptiness, just as it was explained for the five aggregates, others such as the six sense bases, etc.
