A Commentary on the Heart of the Blessed Perfection of Wisdom, by the Teacher Jnanamitra. A Commentary on the Heart of the Blessed Perfection of Wisdom. By the Teacher Jnanamitra. In Sanskrit: Aryaprajnaparamitahrdayavyakhya. In Tibetan: A Commentary on the Heart of the Blessed Perfection of Wisdom. Homage to the Blessed Mother Perfection of Wisdom! Here, "The Heart of the Blessed Mother Perfection of Wisdom" is so-called because it expresses the nature of the sutra. If a name were not given at the beginning, it would be impossible to tell which sutra it is, so the name is mentioned. It is not just a name, but all the sutras of this Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom are included here without exception, so it is called the sutra of sutras. Here, "Blessed" means having conquered the four maras, such as the mara of the aggregates, because through the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, the maras cannot be found, and all maras cannot abide, so it is conquered. "Possessed of" means possessed of six perfections, because all the qualities of knowledge arise from the blessings of the Perfection of Wisdom, so it is possessed of. "Gone beyond" means gone beyond the non-abiding nirvana, because through the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, all thoughts, minds, and consciousnesses are reversed, and it is separated from all habitual tendencies, so it is gone beyond. "Mother" means that all the Buddhas of the three times arise from practicing the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, and are generated by the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, so the Perfection of Wisdom is the mother of all Buddhas, so it is called "Mother." "Wisdom" means knowing exactly as it is through the three kinds of wisdom: hearing, thinking, and meditating, so it is called "Wisdom." "Perfection" means that because wisdom does not see any dharma whatsoever, it has gone beyond characteristics, the two extremes, and birth and death, so it is called "Perfection." "Heart" means that all the profound and supreme essences from within the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom and so on are contained within this short sutra.

Since there is nothing that is not included in it, it is called the essence. Homage to the Bhagavan Mother Prajnaparamita, this is because it is also said in the Hundred Thousand Prajnaparamita Sutra that if you pay homage to Prajnaparamita, it is the same as paying homage to all the Buddhas of the three times, therefore it is to accumulate merit and make offerings that one prostrates. Now is the main text, this Prajnaparamita is clearly explained from beginning to end in seven ways, what are they? Namely: introduction, entering into wisdom, the nature of emptiness, the realm of wisdom, the merits of wisdom, the fruit of wisdom, and the dharani of wisdom. Among them, the introduction is from "Thus I have heard" to "seated in one way." Entering into wisdom is from "The five aggregates are also viewed as empty by nature." The nature of emptiness is from "Neither obtained nor not obtained." The realm of wisdom is from "Without attainment, one abides and practices Prajnaparamita." The merits of wisdom are from "Reaching the end of Nirvana." The fruit of wisdom is from "Manifestly attaining complete perfect enlightenment." The dharani of wisdom is up to the end of the mantra. Now explain the meaning of the introduction. "Thus I have heard" refers to all the sutras of the Mahayana being heard by the noble Manjushri, and then compiled, so it is said "Thus I have heard." Among them, "Thus" refers to the various names of the Heart Sutra. "Thus I have heard" refers to hearing from the feet of the Bhagavan, spoken from the auspicious throat, and heard directly by the ear. "At one time" means that the Heart Sutra cannot be spoken at other times. It refers to the time when the Bhagavan spoke once to these retinues in Rajagriha. Bhagavan refers to, so who is the teacher? Where is the place? Who are the retinues? What did they do after gathering? The teacher is the Buddha.

Bhagavan. The place was Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagrha. The retinue was a great community of monks and bodhisattva mahasattvas. What did they gather to do? To teach the heart of the Perfection of Wisdom. The explanation of the words is the same as before. The name Rajagrha Vulture Peak Mountain is famous because of the merits of King Bimbisara, and it was named as a general name for the cities of the region. The name Vulture Peak Mountain is because that region is vast, it is Vulture Peak Mountain, high and with many birds gathering, hence the name. The name great community of monks is because of great power and large numbers. The name great community of bodhisattvas is because all have directly realized the complete meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, and are many bodhisattvas who establish others in the Perfection of Wisdom. The name staying together means that the Bhagavan was surrounded by many retinues and stayed. This is the introduction. Now, let's explain the meaning of entering wisdom: At that time, the Bhagavan entered the samadhi called Profound Appearance of Dharma, which means that the Bhagavan entered into samadhi in order to be compassionate and bless those retinues and all sentient beings. The name Profound Appearance of Dharma is because this Dharma scripture shows and knows that all dharmas transcend all objects and limits, hence it is called Profound Appearance. The name entering samadhi means to abide in that profound state. Also, at that time, the bodhisattva mahasattva, the noble Avalokiteshvara, contemplated the profound practice of the Perfection of Wisdom.
