He thought that none of those truly exist. Here, the questions and answers are easy to understand, so they are not explained in detail. I say that in worldly terms, it is to turn away from grasping at what is not true, but it is not so in reality. This is because, in reality, there is no being belonging to the three skandhas that can be designated. It is merely a return in the worldly convention from grasping at those untrue dharmas as true. It is merely named by that name, but it is not so in reality. The Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, abiding in reality, has attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, has become fully enlightened? When asked this, the Blessed One replied, 'Subhuti, it is not so, because there is no place to abide in reality, and there is nothing to be fully enlightened.' Then, does he abide in the category of magical displays? If it is not in reality, then is it by emanation? This is a rhetorical question. Because that is also completely non-existent, the answer was given: 'The nature of being inexpressible, and the form of individually understanding all dharmas by one's own wisdom, is perfect and complete enlightenment.' Here, are you engaged in reality or are you engaged in the category of magical displays? The intention is, why are you asking where I dwell? By saying, 'That is not abiding in the realm of the conditioned, nor is it abiding in the realm of the unconditioned,' and so on, it is shown that even enlightenment is not abiding anywhere. The Thus-Gone One showed this by the example of emanation. Subhuti, there is no difference between the Thus-Gone One and the emanation of the Thus-Gone One. The emanation of the Thus-Gone One does the work, which means that when the Buddha, the Blessed One, passes into complete nirvana, if at that time he does not see a Bodhisattva like Maitreya who is suitable to be prophesied, to whom he could say, 'You will do the work of the Buddha after my passing and benefit sentient beings,' then he emanates an emanation with a perfect form similar to his own body and commands, 'You do the work of the Buddha.' When he passes into nirvana, that emanation of the Thus-Gone One will be in the world.

In all realms, he performs the deeds of a Buddha, benefiting sentient beings. When he sees a Bodhisattva worthy of receiving a prophecy, at that time, entrusting sentient beings to that Bodhisattva's hand, he shows himself passing into complete Nirvana. There is not even the slightest difference between that emanation and the Tathagata. What is meant by 'emanation of suchness'? It means that both are of the nature of non-things, arising for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, and spoken of in that way because they perform those deeds. Therefore, has the Bhagavan not disturbed the suchness of all dharmas? It is because he speaks of non-existent dharmas as existent. Subhuti, that I have shown the dharmas by names and signs means that in worldly conventions, I have accepted the discriminations of children, and it is not easy otherwise, so I speak in that way. There is no attachment to names and signs, which means that for worldly people, it is impossible to make them understand by other means, so I use conventional terms that are in accordance with them, but since there is no attachment, there is no fault. If one clings to 'this is true,' then it becomes a fault, and this is what is being shown. Subhuti, if a name clings to a name, or a sign clings to a sign? It means that if a name clings to a name, or a sign clings to a sign, then emptiness itself would also cling to emptiness. Likewise, if the signless and so forth were also clung to, then emptiness and so forth are non-
