The example of a Bodhisattva's skillful means of abiding in non-abiding Nirvana is shown by taking the example of a bird flying in the sky. A bird flying in the sky does not settle in the middle of the sky, nor does it rely solely on the ground like other animals. Similarly, a Bodhisattva with skillful means, by practicing the three doors of liberation, does not manifest the stages of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Although he practices various Bodhisattva practices through skillful means, he does not abide in samsara like ordinary beings. Thus, not abiding in either samsara or Nirvana is called non-abiding Nirvana. This is what is being taught. Subhuti, for example, a strong man becomes a teacher of throwing stones, from this phrase until when those roots of virtue are fully matured into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, then, he realizes the ultimate and perfect end. In between, a Bodhisattva practicing Prajnaparamita, before accomplishing the complete benefit of others, does not act for his own benefit. The example is taken from a strong man becoming a teacher of throwing stones. An arrow shot into the sky, and then successive arrows are shot one after another, so that they do not fall to the ground. This is an example of the Bodhisattva's aspiration and the strong power of practicing virtue, not giving up until the benefit of sentient beings is complete. This should be understood. Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing Prajnaparamita, should thoroughly examine the nature of those dharmas in that way. This sentence is a summary of the above-mentioned meanings, that is, the teachings on the nature of the Bodhisattva's skillful means, should be studied in this way. Request: O Bhagavan, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who studies this Dharma nature, from this sentence to the study of the three doors of liberation, in short, not turning back from the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment is a difficult task. O Bhagavan, it is very rare. O Sugata, it is very rare. In between is the Bodhi-

The practice of Prajñāpāramitā. Those who study the profound Dharma-nature of Prajñāpāramitā, understanding all dharmas as emptiness, are afraid of emptiness. Their minds become discouraged, and it is difficult to avoid falling into the paths of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas in the intermediate state without attaining unsurpassed Bodhi. This is extremely rare and wonderful. The Blessed One said: Subhūti, it is like this: Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas do not abandon all sentient beings. Subhūti, whatever Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas do not abandon all sentient beings, the difference in their aspiration will become like that. That is to say, although Bodhisattvas understand all dharmas as emptiness, they are afraid of emptiness, and their minds become discouraged. In the intermediate state, they fall away from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi. The difficult practice of not falling into the paths of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas is also because great compassion does not abandon all sentient beings. They vow that until all sentient beings are established in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi, they will not attain perfect enlightenment themselves. Therefore, it will become like that. Although all sentient beings are not abandoned, sentient beings who practice non-virtuous Dharma, sentient beings who cling to self, sentient beings whose minds are inverted, sentient beings who discriminate between persons and dharmas, sentient beings who engage in characteristics, and sentient beings who aspire to worldly and transmundane dharmas are not abandoned. Regarding this, Subhūti, any Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who says, "I have not abandoned all sentient beings; I shall liberate these beings who abide in non-virtuous Dharma," from here until the attainment of all-knowingness, without abandoning them, one should understand that they do not realize the ultimate reality. Up to this point, because they have not abandoned sentient beings who practice non-virtuous Dharma, they accomplish the Samādhi of the three doors of liberation, and it is taught that they do not realize the ultimate reality like Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas.
