To initiate the discussion of the teachings, Subhuti said: "That is, no one should meditate" means that the agent of meditation is shown to be without substance. "Nothing should be meditated upon" means that the object of meditation is shown to be without substance. "Nowhere should one meditate" means that the place of meditation is shown to be without substance. Why is that? World Honored One, because in this profound Perfection of Wisdom, whatever is meditated upon, whatever is to be meditated upon, or whatever dharma is meditated upon, nothing is completely established or discernible. This statement shows the reason why this Perfection of Wisdom is profound and cannot be meditated upon. "Whatever is meditated upon" means that the meditator is shown to be indiscernible. "Whatever is to be meditated upon" means that the object of meditation is shown to be indiscernible. "With what one meditates" means that the wisdom of meditation is shown to be indiscernible. "No dharma is completely established or discernible" means that the meditator, the object of meditation, and the dharma with which one meditates, all of these are not established as truly existing in ultimate reality. Because they are indiscernible, they cannot be meditated upon. World Honored One, meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom is meditating on space. This statement shows that the example of the Perfection of Wisdom being unmeditable is taken from space. Just as space has no substance and cannot be meditated upon, so too the Perfection of Wisdom has no substance in ultimate reality and cannot be meditated upon. World Honored One, for example, meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom is meditating on all dharmas. This statement means that all dharmas are empty of inherent existence and without substance, so they cannot be meditated upon. Similarly, the Perfection of Wisdom also cannot be meditated upon. World Honored One, for example, meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom is meditating on what does not exist. This statement means that just like a rabbit's horn, there is no substance whatsoever, so it cannot be meditated upon. Similarly, the Perfection of Wisdom also has no substance whatsoever in ultimate reality, so

This is the meaning of "no meditation." World-Honored One, for example, practicing the Prajnaparamita is practicing without clinging. This indicates that in the absence of both the grasped and the grasper, there is no meditation. Similarly, in the Prajnaparamita, there is no entity of the grasped and the grasper, therefore there is no meditation, which is what is being expressed. World-Honored One, for example, practicing the Prajnaparamita is thoroughly meditating on meditation, which means that the Prajnaparamita has no entity in the ultimate truth. Therefore, meditating on it is making meditation non-existent, which is its meaning. The Indian word "Vibhavana" (梵文天城体:विभावना,梵文罗马拟音:vibhāvanā,literal meaning: various meditations) can mean both thorough meditation and no meditation. Here, it should be understood as no meditation. The World-Honored One taught: Subhuti, like this, practicing the Prajnaparamita is thoroughly meditating on what is meditated upon, because all dharmas, such as form, have no entity in the ultimate truth. This is said to initiate the explanation of no meditation. What is called thoroughly meditating on what is meditated upon means that meditating on entities such as form is no meditation. This was said to Subhuti. Asking, World-Honored One, for example, practicing the Prajnaparamita is thoroughly meditating on form, which means that practicing the Prajnaparamita is realizing that form has no entity in the ultimate truth. Therefore, meditating on form with no meditation is what is being expressed. Just as the explanation was made for form, the same explanation should be applied to all dharmas, from feeling, etc., up to all-knowingness. The World-Honored One taught: Subhuti, it is just so, it is just so. Subhuti, for example, practicing the Prajnaparamita is thoroughly meditating on form, from here until Subhuti, for example, practicing the Prajnaparamita is thoroughly meditating on all-knowingness, these words are repeated to strengthen the meaning and words spoken by Subhuti, and the World-Honored One said that it is true.
