Chapter Thirty-eight: The Chapter on Non-Attachment Chapter Thirty-eight: The Chapter on Non-Attachment Request: World Honored One, if Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas develop faith in this profound Prajnaparamita, etc., and for those Bodhisattvas who have faith in the profound meaning of where all dharmas are taught as having no going and no coming, they have also practiced the conduct of Bodhisattvas in the past, and have also attended to and revered the Buddhas of the past, cultivated roots of virtue, and have been completely embraced by virtuous friends, then how should one understand the nature, conduct, characteristics, and forms of those Bodhisattvas? Subhuti asked. The World Honored One replied: Those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have developed faith in this profound Prajnaparamita, their nature will become one of being separated from the complete removal of desire. This is because, by realizing that all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, through the means of not fixating on both what is to be desired and what desires, desire is eliminated and ceases to exist. Not being stained by the defilement of desire, and being separated, is indeed the nature of those Bodhisattvas. Those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, their nature is one of being separated from the complete removal of hatred and ignorance. This is because, in ultimate truth, all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, through the means of not fixating on the object of hatred and the object that becomes ignorant, and the agent of hatred and the object to be made ignorant, hatred and ignorance are completely removed, not being stained by the defilement of hatred and ignorance, and being separated, is indeed the nature of those Bodhisattvas. Those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, their nature becomes one of being separated from the conduct of desire. Those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, their nature becomes one of being separated from the conduct of hatred and ignorance. This is to show what the conduct of those Bodhisattvas is like. As mentioned above, desire, hatred, and ignorance are eliminated through the means of non-fixation, and are separated from them.

If they are distracted by the three, namely desire, hatred, and delusion, they have no way of using them; being separated from those ways, being remote from those ways is the way and sign of those Bodhisattvas, thus it is shown. Subhuti, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will become the nature of being remote from the sign of desire. Subhuti, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will become the nature of being remote from the sign of hatred and delusion. This shows the sign of those Bodhisattvas, the sign of desire, hatred, and delusion, here refers to the cause and object of desire, hatred, and delusion. Among them, the cause is habit, unabandoned latent habit, and inappropriate attention. The object refers to the object of arising desire such as beautiful women, the object of arising hatred such as enemies, and the objects of not being able to understand the difficult Dharma of dependent origination. Those signs are not present in the Bodhisattva, and being remote, that itself is the sign of those Bodhisattvas, thus it is shown. Subhuti, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will become the nature of being remote from the aspect of desire. Subhuti, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will become the nature of being remote from the aspect of hatred and delusion. This shows what the aspect of those Bodhisattvas is like, the aspect of desire, hatred, and delusion, refers to the sign or mark of entering the object of desire, hatred, and delusion. The Bodhisattva eliminates the aspect of desire, hatred, and delusion, therefore there is no obvious sign of entering the object of desire and so on, being remote itself is its aspect, thus it is shown. Question: Blessed One, what is the conduct of those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have completely sought this profound Prajnaparamita? It refers to the nature, conduct, and sign as described above.

A Bodhisattva endowed with characteristics, who understands the meaning of the profound Prajñāpāramitā, what is the nature or essence upon which they rely? Thus asked Subhūti. The Blessed One replied: Subhūti, if a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva is able to fully understand this profound Prajñāpāramitā, then they will become of the nature of possessing all-knowingness. Therefore, the Bodhisattva who understands the profound meaning of Prajñāpāramitā, in conventional truth, also relies on the meaning of attaining all-knowingness, and in ultimate truth, is also inseparable in nature from all-knowingness. This is the meaning. Asked: Blessed One, is it not the case that a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, possessing the nature of all-knowingness, becomes a refuge for sentient beings? Thus, those Bodhisattvas who understand the profound meaning of Prajñāpāramitā, if in ultimate truth they are one in nature with all-knowingness and inseparable, being of a non-conceptual nature, will they benefit sentient beings? Thus asked. The Blessed One replied: Subhūti, it is so, it is so. A Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, possessing the nature of all-knowingness, will become a refuge for sentient beings. This means that although in ultimate truth there is no conceptualization, in conventional truth, through skillful means, they do not fail to benefit sentient beings, but rather benefit sentient beings and become their refuge. Thus it is taught. Asked: Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva makes the vow to completely liberate all sentient beings from suffering, but for them, if they cannot perceive sentient beings and the designation of sentient beings, then these are difficult deeds to perform. This means that those Bodhisattvas, in ultimate truth, are one in nature with all-knowingness, being non-conceptual, and all sentient beings also have no substance in ultimate truth, therefore recognizing that they cannot be established as sentient beings, but through skillful means, in conventional truth, they make the vow to completely liberate all sentient beings from suffering, and persevere with diligence.
