In order to initiate the discussion and explain that everything is unproduced and without substance, that is why he asked. The Venerable Subhuti said: Kausika, not only are these temporarily unproduced, but also, Kausika, form is unproduced, and what is unproduced is not form, etc. From the five aggregates of form, etc., to the Tathagata, all those mentioned by name of dharma are actually unproduced. Whatever is unproduced is actually not the nature of the dharmas such as form. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, thought to himself: Alas! This Venerable Subhuti is not in contradiction with imputation, and also teaches the nature of dharma, which is profound wisdom. This means that Subhuti had previously explained that all dharmas are neither born nor destroyed, and that what is unproduced and unborn is not the nature of all dharmas such as form. Indra realized that Subhuti's wisdom was so profound that he was amazed, explaining that it is not in contradiction with imputation, and also teaches the nature of dharma, which means that in conventional truth, he also teaches that it is not in contradiction with the nature of all dharmas, and in ultimate truth, he explains that those dharmas are neither born nor destroyed and are without substance, which is also teaching the nature of dharma. Then, the Blessed One said to the Lord of the Gods, Indra: It is just so, Kausika, it is just so. This Venerable Subhuti possesses profound wisdom, and in this way is not in contradiction with imputation, and also teaches the nature of dharma. This means that he acknowledged that the meaning of what Indra thought was true. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how is it that this Venerable Subhuti is not in contradiction with imputation, and also teaches the nature of dharma? This is so that all the retinue may know the meaning of not being in contradiction with imputation and also teaching the nature of dharma, so he asked the Blessed One. After he had thus spoken, the Blessed One said to the Lord of the Gods, Indra: Kausika, form is merely imputation. Whatever is merely imputation, that is the nature of dharma. The Venerable Subhuti does not contradict this.

The phrase "has been taught," and so on, refers to all the dharmas from the five aggregates up to the fully perfected Buddha, which are merely nominally designated in conventional truth. Whatever is merely nominally designated is not truly existent in ultimate truth. That very absence of true existence in ultimate truth is the nature of all dharmas, and therefore it is reality itself. Teaching in a way that does not contradict such reality means teaching without adding or subtracting, which is the meaning of "has been taught." Kauśika, why is that? The statement "the nature of dharmas is non-contradictory, utterly non-contradictory" means that if there were a real entity, then those two entities might contradict each other because their characteristics are dissimilar. However, in ultimate truth, those dharmas are without entity and are of one taste, so there is no contradiction or utter contradiction between them. This is what is being taught. That which is non-contradictory and utterly non-contradictory has been taught by the Venerable Subhūti as being without contradiction. That is, the Venerable Subhūti taught the dharma in such a way that the conventional and ultimate truths do not contradict each other, and that in ultimate truth there is no contradictory entity. Kauśika, in that way, the Venerable Subhūti does not contradict designation and also teaches the nature of reality. In that way, Subhūti concludes the meaning of explaining that the conventional and ultimate truths are without contradiction. Thus, how should a bodhisattva mahāsattva abide in the Perfection of Wisdom? The answer is that not attending to all dharmas, such as form, is abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom. Having taught that, and then asked, "How should one train in the Perfection of Wisdom?" the answer is: In order to explain in detail the meaning of how to train in the Perfection of Wisdom, it is taught that thereafter, the venerable Subhūti said this to the lord of the gods, Indra, and so on. Kauśika, it is just so, it is just so. The Blessed One has also taught that all dharmas are merely designations. This is what the lord of the gods, Indra, said earlier: "How amazing! The Venerable Subhūti does not contradict designation and also...
