By not abiding in the manner of focusing, it means that Subhuti summarized the meaning of not abiding in the manner of focusing and explained it to Indra. Thus, not abiding in any dharma is abiding in the Prajnaparamita. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra thought to himself: How should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the Prajnaparamita? This means that one should not abide in any dharma such as form, and it is also said that one should abide in the Prajnaparamita. Since one cannot abide in emptiness, how should one abide in the Prajnaparamita? He realized this. Then, the venerable Subhuti, having fully understood the discernment of the venerable Sharadvatiputra's mind, said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Where does the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha abide? This is to show that not abiding in anything is abiding in the Prajnaparamita, so Subhuti asked Sharadvatiputra where the Tathagata abides. The Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha also truly understands that all dharmas are unreal, and not abiding in any dharma is abiding in the Prajnaparamita. He said: Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata does not abide anywhere. This is Shariputra's answer to Subhuti's question of where the Tathagata abides, meaning that he does not abide in any dharma. Venerable Subhuti, the mind of the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha is non-abiding, which is to show the reason for not abiding anywhere. The Tathagata's mind does not grasp the characteristics of any dharma, nor does it abide in the manner of focusing. He does not abide in form, he does not abide in feeling, and so on, he does not abide in omniscience.

Up to the syllable "o," it is said that the Tathagata's mind does not abide in anything, which indicates in what dharmas it does not abide. All the dharmas from form, etc., up to the all-knowingness, since they are not established as truly existent in the ultimate sense, the Tathagata's mind does not abide in those dharmas in the manner of attachment, that is its meaning. Subhuti said: Son of Sharadvatiputra, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the Prajnaparamita? The Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha neither abides in form, nor does he not abide in form, and so on, neither abides in all-knowingness, nor does he not abide in all-knowingness. Thus, one should abide in the Prajnaparamita. This passage shows that one should abandon the two extremes of abiding and not abiding. Just as the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha neither abides in dharmas such as form, nor does he not abide, one should do so. "Does not abide" is because in the ultimate sense, all dharmas such as form are empty of inherent existence, so one cannot abide. "Does not not abide" is because in the conventional sense, it is merely worldly terminology, abiding in imputation, etc., so it is also not not abiding. Son of Sharadvatiputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should thus train and abide in the Prajnaparamita, this passage is a concluding explanation of the meaning of being free from the two extremes mentioned above. Just as the Tathagata abandoned the two extremes of abiding and not abiding, neither abiding in abiding nor not abiding in not abiding, a Bodhisattva should also thus train and abide. Then, starting from "Then, some sons of gods in that assembly thought thus," it shows that the profound meaning of the Prajnaparamita is beyond the reach of words and is inexpressible.

If it transforms, it can be known. Whatever the noble Subhuti teaches, speaks, reveals, distinguishes, clarifies, and definitively shows the Perfection of Wisdom, that is unknowable. Because of this, for all phenomena, it is neither abiding nor non-abiding, but only abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom. Therefore, one should abide in a non-clinging manner. When Subhuti was teaching, some gods in the assembly heard and thought that the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom taught by Subhuti was profound and difficult to understand. Even the language of yakshas, the sounds of yakshas, etc., which are not human languages and sounds, can be learned and understood if studied. Abiding in nothing, but only abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom, as taught, and that all phenomena are neither abiding nor non-abiding, the meaning of Subhuti's words is unknowable. Then, the venerable Subhuti, fully knowing the thoughts of those gods with his mind, said to those gods: "Gods, is what you said unknowable?" This is because the thoughts that arose in the gods earlier, even if not spoken, were already known by Subhuti's mind, so he asked in return: "Is the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom that I taught unknowable?" The gods said: "Noble Subhuti, it is unknowable." This was said to make Subhuti teach the meaning that cannot be spoken. Subhuti said: "Gods, it is like this, not even a single letter is spoken. Whatever is not spoken, that is not audible. Whatever is not audible, that is unknowable." When I teach the Perfection of Wisdom, it is only to guide and tame sentient beings, so in conventional truth, I speak by imputing words and letters. But in ultimate truth, because one cannot reach by speaking words and letters, not even a single letter is spoken. Therefore, not speaking words and letters, that is also not audible and knowable.
