Thus it is taught. Why is that? Because the Perfection of Wisdom is not a letter. There is no one who teaches, hears, or understands it. This is the reason for not uttering even a single letter. The Perfection of Wisdom is neither the nature of words and letters, nor is it something to be taught by words and letters. Why is that? Sons of the gods, the enlightenment of the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas is without letters. This shows that the Perfection of Wisdom is not the nature of words and letters, nor is it a reason that can be taught by words and letters. Supreme enlightenment is neither the nature of words and letters, nor is it attained through the teaching of words and letters, but because it is the nature of knowledge that each of the noble ones knows for themselves, therefore, in the ultimate sense, not a single letter is spoken. Sons of the gods, for example, when the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha emanates an emanation, etc., by the examples of emanation, dreams, reflections, and illusions, it is shown that in the ultimate sense, all dharmas cannot be taught or expressed by words and letters. Then, those sons of the gods thought, "Alas, this venerable Subhuti is a clarifier!" This is because, by the examples of emanation, etc., it is explained that the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom cannot be expressed or taught by words and letters, nor can it be attained. The sons of the gods were pleased and praised Subhuti, saying that he clearly shows the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom. "Alas, this noble Subhuti, although he clarifies the Perfection of Wisdom, he also enters into what is deeper than the deep, and subtler than the subtle." This means that even though he is good at clarifying, because his wisdom is sharp, his mind is deep and subtle, he enters into the extremely deep and extremely subtle meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom. This is praise. "Deeper than the deep" means that the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom is deep and difficult to fathom for the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas.

Etc., it means that it cannot be realized and must be shown to others. The so-called "entering into what is even more subtle than the subtle" refers to the meaning of the Prajñāpāramitā, which is subtle and difficult to fathom, and becomes the object of non-discriminating wisdom. This shows that I enter into it in the manner of individual realization. Then, the venerable Subhūti, knowing the thoughts of those gods completely with his mind, said to those gods: Gods, form is not profound, not subtle, etc., which is to say that the gods previously thought: This noble Subhūti is expounding a very profound doctrine, entering into a very subtle realm. Although they thought this in their minds, they did not say it, but Subhūti knew it with his mind and taught that profundity and subtlety themselves are also unreal and inexpressible in the ultimate truth. If there were such a thing as profundity and subtlety, then whether it be worldly dharmas such as form, or supramundane dharmas such as the six perfections, they should belong to it. However, all dharmas from the aggregate of form to omniscience are empty of inherent existence. Whatever is empty of inherent existence is neither profound nor subtle. That is what is to be expressed. After that, those gods thought: In this Dharma teaching, there is no designation of form, etc., which is to say that through metaphors such as illusion, it is explained that the Prajñāpāramitā is not taught by anyone in the ultimate truth, not heard by anyone, and not known by anyone. And, when the gods sitting in the assembly heard that all dharmas such as form are neither profound nor subtle, they thought: If all dharmas are beyond speech and thought, and inexpressible, then in this Dharma teaching of the Prajñāpāramitā, is there no designation of form, etc., or even Buddha, Bodhi, and letters? That is what is to be expressed. Then, the venerable Subhūti said to those gods: Gods, it is so, it is so. The Bodhi of the Tathāgata is inexpressible, without sound.

That which is not shown by anyone. That which is not heard by anyone. That which is not known by anyone, this is the unsurpassed Bodhi realized by the Tathagata, that Bodhi in ultimate reality is not the nature of any dharma, so it cannot be expressed or indicated by words and letters, etc. Nor can it be heard or known by anyone through words and letters, etc. Because all dharmas such as form are no different from the nature of Bodhi in ultimate reality, so there is no establishment of names such as form, this is what is to be explained. Sons of the gods, therefore, if someone wants to abide in the fruit of stream-entry, wants to directly realize the fruit of stream-entry, they cannot rely on this forbearance. And so on, this is to say that wanting to obtain the four fruits of stream-entry, as well as self-Bodhi and unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, because all dharmas such as form are unborn in ultimate reality, so without relying on this forbearance that is beyond speech and thought and nominally established, one cannot obtain the fruits of the three vehicles. If one relies on this forbearance of realizing profound dharmas, one can quickly obtain the fruits of the three vehicles, this is what is to be explained. Sons of the gods, thus, from the moment a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the first thought, because it is unspeakable and unhearable, one should abide in the Prajnaparamita. This is to say that, as mentioned above, in this way, one understands that all dharmas are beyond speech and thought, and are separated from words and letters. Not abiding in any characteristic is abiding in the Prajnaparamita. From the moment of generating the first thought, one should abide in the Prajnaparamita in this way, this is what is to be explained. The Fifteenth Chapter of the Extensive Explanation of the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Prajnaparamita. Chapter Fifteen, the Chapter on Indra.
