Asked, and the Blessed One said: In ultimate truth, all phenomena are not established as having substance, therefore there is no arising or ceasing, etc., and that is truly pure. Asked: Blessed One, what Dharma do Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas who study in this way study? This is because it was said above that they study in a way that does not focus on characteristics, and it was asked in order to dispel the doubt that some in the assembly might have as to whether there were some Dharmas to be studied. There is no study of any Dharma, because in ultimate truth no Dharma is established as having substance, so there is no study of any Dharma. Why is that? Sharadvatiputra, these Dharmas are not in the form that childish ordinary beings manifestly cling to, which is to show the reason why there is no study of any Dharma, that these worldly and transworldly Dharmas are seen and clung to by ordinary beings as having substance, but in ultimate truth they do not exist as such. Asked: Blessed One, in what way do these Dharmas exist? This was asked in order to clarify that meaning. The Blessed One said: They exist as they do not exist. This is to show that they do not exist as they are wrongly seen and clung to as having substance by childish ordinary beings. The word 'exists' does not mean that it exists as a substance, but that it is true as it does not exist, or that it is the very nature of reality. Therefore, in order to clarify that meaning, it is said that because it does not exist in that way, therefore it is said to not exist. Asked: Blessed One, why do we say that something does not exist when it does not exist? This was asked in order to extensively explain the reason why form and other Dharmas do not exist. The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, form is emptiness of the interior, etc., which is to say that the eighteen emptinesses are mentioned as the reason why form and other Dharmas do not exist. Because it is empty in this way, it does not

It is shown in this way. Just as form is, so are the worldly dharmas from feeling, etc., up to old age and death, and from the perfection of generosity to the eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddha, it is shown that they are not existent. To this, ordinary beings are attached to non-existence, from "attached to craving" to "attached to the unshared dharmas of the Buddha," it is said that these dharmas are not existent in ultimate truth, but ordinary beings, due to the power of ignorance, see them as inverted, clinging to the extremes of permanence and annihilation, and thus become attached to the dharmas. The so-called "attached to non-existence, thereby attached to craving" means that due to inversion, they see the non-existent as existent, thereby generating craving and attachment. "They thoroughly investigate non-existence" means that those ordinary beings see the non-existent as existent due to inversion, thereby investigating and clinging to things and characteristics in various ways. "Because of clinging to the extremes of annihilation and permanence, they do not know or see" means that due to inverted seeing, they cling to the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, etc., thereby becoming the fault of wrong views. "Investigating those non-existent dharmas, thereby clinging to name and form" means that they see the non-existent as existent due to inversion, thereby clinging to the dharmas of samsara such as the five aggregates. The so-called "name" and "form" refer to the five aggregates. The four, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, are formless, merely names, so they are called "name." The form aggregate has form, so it is called "form." Therefore, "name" and "form" refer to the five aggregates. The so-called "they are attached to the perfection of generosity," etc., means that those ordinary beings, due to the power of seeing the non-existent as existent due to inversion, see the pure dharmas as real and cling to them. They are so attached to
