Sixth, The Chapter on Absence of Characteristics. Sixth, The Chapter on Absence of Characteristics. Having thus shown the practice of thorough investigation, the practice of means will be shown thereafter. That is, from then on, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he practices form due to unskilled means, then he practices characteristics." Up to: "If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, without a timid mind and without complete timidity, without fear, without panic, without terror, then, venerable Sharadvatiputra, it should be known that this Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is close to omniscience." This shows that the practice of means is also shown in two ways: one should be alarmed by unskilled means, and one should rely on skillful means. Unskilled means are also of two kinds: practicing characteristics and practicing manifest activity. Among them, practicing characteristics with unskilled means is: "Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he practices form due to unskilled means, then he practices characteristics." Up to: "Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks, 'Such practice is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, this is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom,' even such practice is practicing characteristics. It should be known that this Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is unskilled in means." This shows that practicing form with unskilled means, etc., refers to the five aggregates. If one discriminates the characteristics of each of form, etc., then one is practicing characteristics, not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, as shown. "Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he practices form as permanent due to unskilled means, then he practices characteristics," etc., refers to the aggregates and

Such as the worldly dharmas like mothers, and the eighteen kinds of unmixed Buddha dharmas such as the Perfection of Giving, and even the transcendental dharmas, if one clings to and practices with characteristics such as permanence and impermanence, happiness and suffering, self and no-self, peace and non-peace, emptiness and non-emptiness, then that is practicing with characteristics, not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. If one practices in this way, that bodhisattva is unskilled in means, therefore one should abandon the unskilled means, this is what is shown. Then the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, how should one know that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is unskilled in means?" And so on, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if that Bodhisattva Mahasattva has no share in realizing the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, what need is there to mention realizing the Unsurpassed Perfect Complete Enlightenment, there is no such place. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, one should know that they are unskilled in means." Up to the point of showing that one practices with manifest activities through unskilled means. "Being attached to form" means seeing form as truly existent and being attached to it with a reversed view. "That perception" means grasping the characteristics of good and bad, etc., with a reversed perception. "Blessing" means being attached to and abiding in the reality of form with a reversed mind. "Practicing with the manifest activity of form" means seeing form as truly existent with such reversed view, reversed perception, and reversed mind, and practicing in this way is practicing with the manifest activity of the arising and ceasing of form, etc., not practicing the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom. These are birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, disturbance, etc.

Cannot be completely liberated. Saying that one cannot be completely liberated from great suffering means pointing out the fault of being attached to the appearance of form, meaning that one cannot be liberated from samsara and attain liberation. Similarly, it should be applied from feeling and so on up to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha. Sharadvatiputra, if that Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not have the fortune to realize even the Hearer's Ground or the Solitary Buddha's Ground, what need is there to mention realizing the Unsurpassed Perfect Complete Enlightenment? This is to point out the fault that if one practices with attachment to the appearance of dharmas, one will not attain the fruit of liberation. The so-called "there is no place" means that if one clings to dharmas as real and practices with attachment to appearances, it is impossible to realize the Unsurpassed Perfect Complete Enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the Prajnaparamita in order to skillfully understand the means? And so on, this is to explain the method of practicing with skillful means. Among them, practicing with skillful means is also divided into two types: practicing without clinging to dharmas and practicing without clinging to the characteristics of dharmas. Among them, Subhuti said: Sharadvatiputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, he does not practice with form, and so on. Sharadvatiputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Prajnaparamita in this way has the fortune to realize the Unsurpassed Perfect Complete Enlightenment. In between, it explains the method of practicing without clinging to dharmas with skillful means, that is, clinging to permanence, impermanence, happiness, suffering, self, no-self, peace, non-peace, emptiness, non-emptiness, etc., to form and other worldly dharmas, as well as generosity paramita and other transcendental dharmas.
