The so-called "what is" refers to investigating what it is related to. The so-called "what" refers to investigating what cause is called Prajñāpāramitā. The so-called "why" refers to investigating what is done for, called Prajñāpāramitā. In this regard, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practices Prajñāpāramitā, if he practices like this: any dharma that does not exist and is not attainable, is that Prajñāpāramitā? Then this is not practicing Prajñāpāramitā. Even, Venerable Śāradvatīputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practices Prajñāpāramitā, if he thinks and contemplates in this way, when he thinks and contemplates in this way, his mind is not depressed, completely not depressed, not afraid, not fearful, not panicked, then it should be known that the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva has not departed from Prajñāpāramitā. In between, it shows the meaning of investigating "what", that is, it shows that all worldly and transcendental dharmas, knowing that they are without self-nature and unattainable, this is the self-nature of Prajñāpāramitā. If you practice: any dharma that does not exist and is not attainable, is that Prajñāpāramitā? Then this is not practicing Prajñāpāramitā. It means that if you think: all dharmas such as form are unreal and unattainable, this is Prajñāpāramitā, then this is clinging to the appearance, regarding it as real, so it cannot be regarded as practicing Prajñāpāramitā. After that, Venerable Śāradvatīputra said to Venerable Subhūti: "Venerable Subhūti, which dharmas do not exist and are unattainable?" This is to let the retinue widely know the meaning that all dharmas do not exist and are unattainable, so he initiated the topic and asked Subhūti. Subhūti said: "Venerable Śāradvatīputra, inner emptiness" and so on, this is Subhūti extensively explaining the meaning that all dharmas do not exist and are unattainable, that is, the determination of the eighteen emptinesses.

Thus it is declared, therefore, because of emptiness, the phenomena of both mundane and supramundane, such as the Perfection of Wisdom, all phenomena spoken of by name are non-existent and unattainable, as shown. Among the six perfections, the Perfection of Wisdom is mentioned first because the nature of the Perfection of Wisdom is the occasion for complete examination, hence it is mentioned first. Without timidity, and completely without timidity, without fear and without panic, and not becoming terrified, is merely a term for not being afraid of emptiness when contemplating and thinking that all phenomena are non-existent and unattainable. It should be known without being separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, which means that when contemplating that all phenomena are without substance and unattainable, one is not afraid of non-existence, and understanding the meaning of emptiness itself is the nature of the Perfection of Wisdom, hence it is said not to be separated from the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus it is said: Fortunate Subhuti, why should the Bodhisattva Mahasattva know without being separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, up to the point where the limit of reality should be known as without the nature of the limit of reality, it is said what this Perfection of Wisdom is, and a complete examination is made. Subhuti said: Fortunate Shariputra, form is separate from the nature of form, etc., is the answer given by Shariputra to the question of why one should know without being separated from the Perfection of Wisdom. Phenomena such as form, etc., up to the limit of reality, which are spoken of by name, are not existent as their own nature in ultimate truth, and the Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom truly knows that this is the nature of the Perfection of Wisdom, hence it is shown as not being separated from it. Thus it is said: Fortunate Subhuti, what is the nature of form? What is the nature of feeling, etc., is in the previous text, form, etc., are separate from their nature, the words spoken by Subhuti, after Shariputra declared them, for the sake of the retinue, etc.

In order to dispel doubts, if there were such a thing as form, etc., and a dharma called their own nature, then it would be appropriate to speak of separation and non-separation. The question is, what is the nature of these things? Subhuti said: "O son of Sharadvati, endowed with life! The nature of form is non-existence," etc., which means that the nature of form, etc., up to the limit of reality, is not established as existing in the ultimate sense. It is only non-existence that is said to be separate from their nature, and not separate from existence. O son of Sharadvati, endowed with life! In this way, such as "form has no nature of form," etc., the meaning of the non-existence of the nature of the aforementioned dharmas such as form is summarized and shown. The so-called "in this way" means that according to the aforementioned scriptures, dharmas such as form up to the limit of reality should be known to be without self-nature. Therefore, since all these dharmas are without any self-nature in the ultimate sense, knowing this and that dharma is called Prajnaparamita, because it is not related to anything. Therefore, examining "whose is this Prajnaparamita" is also meaningless. O son of Sharadvati, endowed with life! Furthermore, form has no characteristic of form, feeling has no characteristic of feeling, and so on, until the bodhisattva mahasattva who studies this teaching will attain omniscience. Up to this point, the discussion is about examining what Prajnaparamita is. If it is said that Prajnaparamita is so called in order to realize the characteristics of all worldly and transworldly dharmas from form, etc., to the limit of reality, then if all dharmas have no characteristics, then for the sake of realizing the characteristics of which dharma is it called Prajnaparamita? For this kind of pervasive conceptualization, since all dharmas have no characteristics, there is no dharma that can be realized by wisdom, so it is not called Prajnaparamita for the sake of realizing the characteristics of which dharma.
