I am distinguished by the ultimate truth that is neither non-substantial nor substantial. The Blessed One spoke of these three in order. Among them, the establishment of distinctions is said to be "taking what is substantial." Question: Blessed One, how does one go from considering "form" and so on as non-dual, to considering all dharmas as non-dual? The Blessed One said: The three, such as the completely conceptualized, the ultimate distinction of form is not form, nor is it non-form. Whatever is not form, nor is it non-form, that is non-dual. Similarly, it is the same up to the unshared qualities of the Buddhas, therefore it is counted as non-dual. Question: How does a Bodhisattva, skilled in such non-duality, fully know the characteristics, how does he abandon the characteristics, how does he realize the characteristics, and how does he contemplate the characteristics? The Blessed One said: Abandoning the two extremes and entering the Middle Way, regarding form, it is neither fully known nor fully unknown, and up to the qualities of the Buddhas, it is neither fully known nor fully unknown, that itself is the full knowledge. Whatever is neither abandoned nor not abandoned, that itself is the abandonment. Whatever is neither realized nor not realized, that itself is the realization. Whatever, from form up to the qualities of the Buddhas, cultivates the path for the sake of abandonment, it is neither cultivation nor non-cultivation, that itself is the cultivation. Question: How does a Bodhisattva who possesses such full knowledge and so on completely pass into Nirvana? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, this is extremely profound. Thus, he is neither in Nirvana nor not in Nirvana, because he has not completely abandoned Samsara for the sake of benefiting others, therefore he is not in Nirvana; and because he has not completely given up Nirvana for the sake of his own benefit, therefore he is not not in Nirvana. That is cycling from Samsara and Nirvana.

Furthermore, they do not discriminate about nirvana. Therefore, both of these are established, and there is no weariness with either, so neither is abandoned. Question: If both are not taken, how can it not be abandoning both? The Blessed One said: I do not say that both are taken or should be taken, but having closely taken dwelling in the realm of emptiness without characteristics, I say that bodhisattvas do not abandon nirvana. Although they have completely passed into nirvana, through the wisdom that focuses on the realm of non-discrimination, their minds are mastered, and they are skilled in means. For the sake of showing themselves in the cycle of the ten directions of the world, I say that they do not abandon the cycle of existence. All dharmas and their emptiness, and the inseparability of what exists and what does not exist, and whatever is without elaboration, this is the complete characteristic of non-discrimination. Question: Do all Hearers abide in the one-sided, peaceful nirvana? The Blessed One said: That is not so. Sentient beings have various dispositions. Some from the beginning seek excellence, that is, superior distinctions, and they understand that very thing and are satisfied by it. Some from the very beginning seek inferior distinctions, and they are satisfied by obtaining that very thing. Some seek inferior distinctions from the very beginning, and having obtained that very thing, they are not satisfied by it. Of these, the first are bodhisattvas, the second are Hearers who are one-sidedly peaceful, and the third are Hearers who turn into enlightenment. How is it that once they have become arhats, they then seek perfect and complete enlightenment and are born in that and that? Maitreya, I have not said that they are born by the power of karma and afflictions, but even for arhats who go to the ultimate end of nirvana, there are inconceivable births. Question: Which is greater, the vast intention of bodhisattvas or the powerful superior intention of those? Therefore, do they seek excellent distinctions and obtain them? The Blessed One said: This is a hundred

The very state of being free, the very state of being the protector of the world, and the very state of being a universal monarch, etc., do not seek worldly perfections in any way, but completely accumulate roots of virtue for unsurpassed enlightenment, and also have no attachment to those, and no clinging. This is their vast intention. Furthermore, whatever happiness without attachment, happiness without clinging, and the happiness of nirvana, they desire to share with all sentient beings, and completely accumulate roots of virtue for great enlightenment, this is their superior intention, powerful here. Then, what begins with "The venerable Subhuti said" is Subhuti's question. Then, what begins with "The Blessed One said" is the Blessed One's answer. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in that way, whatever mistaken and inverted grasping there is, those are inversions, and those are also shown by the words of Maitreya and Subhuti. Placing them in abandoning and discarding is the command of the Blessed One. That is the action of placing in abandoning inversions, the twenty-second. From "Subhuti asked" to "there is no complete affliction and purification" is the action of placing in the absence of four inversions. Then, from "The venerable Subhuti said" to "transcending the path of words" is the action of placing in purification. Asked, "Blessed One," to "it is not ultimate truth" is the action of placing in the collection of purification. Asked, "Blessed One, whatever Dharma the Tathagata has completely awakened to," to "it will not change to the end of the best of herds" is the action of placing in knowing that conditioned and unconditioned are not different. Asked, "Blessed One," to "there will be a hope of existence" is the action of placing in nirvana. That is the teaching of the twenty-seven activities of the Dharmakaya. If asked, how are the three Kayas the Dharmakaya? Because it is permanent and will never be destroyed, therefore it is Dharma. This Dharma is also the Kaya.
