Lento. Not being attached to consciousness is merely guarding one's own mind, not relying on faith. Subhuti, the four words beginning with "Furthermore" indicate a distracted mind. Attachment to characteristics is enjoying things like eyes and clothes. The other five words are the recitation and so on that arise from irrational attention. From "Thus it was said" to "One should strive" is holding onto reasons for turning outwards. From "That Perfection of Wisdom" to "learning all dharmas" is the decline of the cause. Subhuti, from "For example" to "should be understood" is the decline of savoring the exquisite taste. The words of seeking the elephant's footprints are the decline from the supreme vehicle. The words of the ocean and the cow's footprints are the decline of purpose. The words of extreme victory and the palace of the sun are being ignorant of means. The words of the wheel-turning king and the king of the castle are being ignorant of high and low status. The words of various elaborations are the Blessed Mother discriminating in various things. The words of refuting various essences are being attached to asking about letters to the Blessed Mother. Subhuti, if and so on, is being attached to non-things. The venerable Subhuti and so on, is being attached to its letters. Request, Blessed One and so on, is being attached to its non-letters. Discriminating realms and so on, is the distraction of attention. The words of gain and respect and so on, are tasting the flavors of gain and respect and so on. One falls away due to their very nature. The next falls away due to possessing or not possessing the qualities of practice. The next falls away due to thinking that it is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous. The next falls away due to giving or being miserly. The next falls away due to giving and receiving, and so on. The next falls away due to understanding by mentioning the beginning and understanding by elaborating. The next falls away due to the direct perception and non-direct perception of the Sutras, and so on. The next falls away due to possessing or not possessing the six perfections. The next falls away due to skillful means and unskillful means. Then, one falls away due to obtaining or not obtaining dharani. Then, one falls away due to desire and non-desire. Then, one falls away due to being with or without obscurations. Then, with the single phrase, "Subhuti, furthermore," one turns away from going to the lower realms. Then, one turns away from samsara. Then, from "Subhuti, furthermore," with two phrases, one falls away due to examining alone and with retinue. Then, one falls away due to wanting or not wanting to create opportunities. Then, one falls away due to seeking a little wealth and not wanting to give it away. Then, one falls away due to going towards death and not wanting to go towards death. Then, one falls away due to going towards famine and not going towards famine. Then, one falls away due to going towards a fearful direction and not going towards a fearful direction. Then, with the single phrase, "Subhuti, furthermore," one turns back to look at home. Then, with the three phrases, "Subhuti, furthermore," Mara himself creates obstacles. Then, with two phrases, one nearly accomplishes the artificiality of the perfections and so on. Then, with three phrases, the Mara with the appearance of a Buddha and his retinue both delight in the emanations, the actions of Mara arise and manifest, overwhelming everything, and thus one extensively engages in the Perfection of Wisdom. Those who exert themselves greatly in the Perfection of Wisdom are remembered by all the Buddhas of the ten directions, and virtuous qualities will increase greatly, thus it is well shown.
