How does one fully understand characteristics, how does one abandon characteristics, how does one directly realize characteristics, and how does one contemplate characteristics? The Blessed One said: Having abandoned the two extremes, and having fully entered the Middle Way, that which is the form of which is fully understood is also not, and not fully understood is also not, up to the dharmas of the Buddhas, fully understood is also not, and not fully understood is also not, that itself is its full understanding. That which is abandoned is also not, and not abandoned is also not, that itself is its abandonment. That which is directly realized is also not, and not directly realized is also not, that itself is its direct realization. That which, from form up to the dharmas of the Buddhas, for the sake of abandoning, the path is contemplated is also not, and not contemplated is also not, that itself is its contemplation. Asked: How does a Bodhisattva who possesses such full understanding and so on fully pass into Nirvana? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, this is extremely profound. Thus, he is also not in Nirvana, and also not not in Nirvana, because for the sake of the benefit of others, he has not completely abandoned Samsara, so he is not in Nirvana; and for the sake of his own benefit, he has not completely relinquished Nirvana, so he is not not in Nirvana. Therefore, he does not discriminate Nirvana from Samsara or Samsara from Nirvana. Therefore, both are possible for him, and since there is no weariness for either, he does not completely abandon either. Asked: If neither is taken, how can it be said that both are let go? The Blessed One said: I do not say that both are taken or should be taken, but having closely taken and dwelt in the realm of emptiness, which has no object, I say that the Bodhisattva does not completely abandon Nirvana. Although he is completely liberated from Nirvana, through the wisdom that focuses on the realm of non-discrimination, with skill in means by which the mind is controlled, in order to appear in the cycle of the ten directions of the world, I say that he does not completely abandon Samsara. All dharmas, and their emptiness, and that which is the non-duality of existent and non-existent, and that which is without elaboration.

This is the complete nature of non-discrimination. Question: Do all the Shravakas abide in the one-sided Nirvana of peace? The Blessed One said: That is not so. Sentient beings have various realms. Some from the beginning seek excellence, that is, particularly superior qualities, and they comprehend that and are satisfied with it. Some from the beginning seek inferior distinctions and are satisfied with obtaining them. Some from the beginning seek inferior distinctions and are not satisfied with obtaining them. Among them, the first is the Bodhisattva, the second is the Shravaka who is on the side of peace, and the third is the Shravaka who transforms into Bodhi. How is it that after becoming an Arhat, one seeks perfect and complete enlightenment and is born in that and that place? Maitreya, I did not say that it arises from the power of karma and afflictions. However, even for an Arhat who goes to the ultimate end of Nirvana, there are inconceivable births. Question: Which is greater, the Bodhisattva's vast mind or their superior powerful intention? Therefore, they seek excellent distinctions and will obtain them. The Blessed One said: Whoever does not seek in any way worldly perfections such as Indra himself, the guardian of the world himself, and the wheel-turning king himself, but completely increases the roots of virtue in unsurpassed enlightenment, and also has no attachment or clinging to them, this is their vast mind. Whoever desires to share with all sentient beings the happiness without attachment, the happiness without clinging, and the happiness of Nirvana, and completely increases the roots of virtue in great enlightenment, here, this is their superior powerful intention. Then, the venerable Subhuti and so on are the questions of Subhuti. Then, the Blessed One and so on are the answers of the Blessed One. Therefore, the Bodhisattva is like that, the perfection of wisdom.

When practicing in the Prajñāpāramitā, whatever mistaken and inverted attachments there are, these are inversions. These are also proclaimed by the words of Maitreya and Subhuti. Abandoning and discarding these, establishing them on the right path, is the command of the Blessed One. This is the twenty-second act of establishing the abandonment of inversions. From "Subhuti's question" to "there is no complete affliction and purification," it is the act of establishing the absence of the four inversions. From "the venerable Subhuti" to "transcending the path of words," it is the act of establishing purification. Question: Blessed One! To "not being the ultimate truth," it is the act of establishing the accumulation of purification. Question: Blessed One! By what Dharma did the Tathagata manifest complete perfect enlightenment? To "not changing to the limit of the king of oxen," it is the act of establishing the knowledge that conditioned and unconditioned phenomena are not different. Question: Blessed One! To "will become existent, may it be," it is the act of establishing Nirvana. This is the explanation of the twenty-seven activities of the Dharmakaya. If it is said, how are the three bodies the Dharmakaya? Because it abides and never perishes, it is Dharma. This is also the Dharma, and this is also the body, therefore it is the Dharmakaya, because it is the nature of the body. The Tathagata said that the body of the Tathagata is permanent. To this, the Svabhavikakaya (Essence Body) is permanent by its very nature, because it has no beginning or end. The Sambhogakaya (Enjoyment Body) is permanent by its very imperishable nature, because it has a beginning but no end. The Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body) is permanent by its continuous permanence, because it constantly enters different realms. Similarly, activities are also constant.
